OFFICE OVERVIEW: The Office of Retention, Cultivation & Diversity Programs (RCD) combines cultivation, pipeline development, and diversity programs to better support candidates and employees throughout their careers. RCD is committed to developing, preparing and retaining a racially, ethnically, culturally, and linguistically diverse group of highly effective and culturally proficient teachers and staff members every year. We continue to focus our efforts on three key “levers” for our work: 1) Develop employees 2) Cultivation 3) and Retain employees. These levers remain at the center of our strategy for mitigating teacher attrition and sustaining the retention of our teachers of color. RCD has significantly scaled up and augmented its existing programming to meet high demand and to recruit and develop aspiring and current educators of color. It will also work in concert with the Equity and Strategy Division to ensure Systemic Racism is disrupted by providing Strategic Systemic Support, by ensuring Transparent Accountability and Removing Barriers to Increase the diversity of our school-based and central office staff and leaders. Position Overview: MTEL Instructors are teacher leaders whose primary function is to coach and support BPS employees seeking to pass MTEL exams. All BPS educators and many school support staff must pass MTEL exams to maintain their licensure. MTEL Instructors have strong classroom pedagogy. They are able to effectively communicate the reading comprehension and test-taking strategies that are essential for passing an MTEL. MTEL instructors are critical to the RCD Office’s mission of cultivating and retaining a culturally and linguistically diverse educator workforce. MTEL Instructor Habits of Mind: Mission driven: Understands the historical context of systemic barriers such as standardized testing. Understands their impacts on educators of color and linguistically diverse educators. Understands that the MTEL Prep program’s mission is to address this systemic barrier by providing a support network for culturally and linguistically diverse educators. Embraces conversations about race and equity: MTEL Instructors provide support that help learners feel less test anxiety by engaging in conversations related to race, equity, and inclusion. If an instructor needs help in having conversations with students, the MTEL Team is a diverse network of BPS classroom educators who can lean on each other for support. Growth mindset: MTEL Instructors consistently encourage and model a growth mindset. They encourage MTEL students to embrace the test prep process, even when candidates experience setbacks. Effective Practitioner: MTEL Instructors demonstrate excellent reading comprehension and writing skills because they are strong classroom teachers who share their love of learning both inside and outside the classroom. Job Responsibilities Teaching: Deliver high-quality, engaging instruction to adult learners using BPS MTEL Prep curriculum. Instruction will take the form of discussion, direct teaching, teacher modeling, and independent practice using a variety of proven methods. Differentiate instruction when needed to give all students access to the curriculum regardless of disability, instructional level, English proficiency, or level of interest in the subject. Maintain a safe, organized and supportive classroom by modeling a growth mindset, promoting positive interactions, and quickly addressing behaviors that are not in line with our growth mindset philosophy. Provide 1 on 1 coaching sessions that reinforce test-taking strategies and reading comprehension skills Participate in instructor meetings and training with MTEL Program Specialists and other MTEL Instructors. Case Management: Evaluate student skills and readiness for MTEL using methods such as 1 on 1 coaching, analysis of comprehension skills, and review of MTEL test prep strategies. Communicate effectively with students regarding their progress and test preparedness. Share with students a 1 on 1 coaching schedule and follow up all coaching sessions with a summary of next steps. Monitor student progress: send follow up emails for candidates who do not sign up for coaching, confirm when a student registers for an MTEL, follow up on their MTEL score, develop an action plan if a student needs additional support. QUALIFICATIONS__REQUIRED: Current active BPS Employee Education: Hold a Bachelor's degree. Hold a valid Massachusetts Teaching License Current classroom teacher with 3-5 years of teaching experience Possess mastery of pedagogical and subject matter skills Strong reading comprehension and writing skills Communicate digitally using the BPS e-mail system, Google Drive, and other digital resources Demonstrate commitment to diversity, closing the achievement gap, and ensuring all students have access to the highest quality instruction Strong interpersonal skills, ability to work effectively with a team, fostering collaboration and growth Current authorization to work in the United States - Candidates must have such authorization by their first day of employment Qualifications– Preferred Hold a valid license in the MTEL subject area you are applying for For English as a Second Language MTEL: Passed the ESL MTEL in the last 5 years For Foundations of Reading MTEL: Passed the FOR MTEL in the last 5 years. Experience facilitating adult learning and building relationships with adult learners Terms/Salary: BTU Stipend Opportunity . Instructional and training hours will be compensated at the BTU rate of $56.81 an hour on a per course basis. Below are the approximate course hours for each MTEL prep course offered in our program. The hours include training time, instructional time, course preparation time, and 1 on 1 meeting time. C&L Reading: Max stipend of $3,500 per course C&L Writing: $4,200 per course (maximum of 72 instructional hours) Foundations of Reading: $3,400 per course (maximum of 60 instructional hours) English as a Second Language: $3,200 per course (maximum of 55 instructional hours) Bilingual Education: $3,400 per course (maximum of 60 instructional hours) General Curriculum Math: $1,700 per course (maximum of 30 instructional hours) General Curriculum Science: $1,700 per course (maximum of 30 instructional hours General Curriculum History: $1,700 per course (maximum of 30 instructional hours) MTEL Flex: $1,700 per course (maximum of 30 instructional hours) Fall 2023 MTEL Prep Courses will occur between October 2 and December 15 * We are particularly looking for Bilingual Education, C&L Reading, and General Curriculum Math instructors for Fall 2023.* Please note that MTEL prep courses and tutoring are typically offered on the evenings (between 4:00-8:00 PM) and occasionally on the weekends. MTEL prep curriculum is fully provided by the program *Most MTEL Prep classes in Fall 2023 will be offered in-person or in a hybrid model. The Bilingual Education MTEL Prep class will be fully virtual in Fall 2023.
