Position Information:Title: Master, Fisheries Research Vessel Functional Title: Boat Operator Location: Boston Harbor Island State Park, Hingham, MAStart Date: 3/31/24End Date: 10/26/24 # of Positions: Please note, if you are selected for this position and will be working less than 90 days, the position will automatically revert to a short-term position. Our short-term positions are not part of the salary scale that is advertised within this job posting. Should this position revert to a short-term seasonal position (less than 90 days), your salary rate will be discussed with you during the interview phase of the process. The Department of Conservation and Recreation manages one of the largest and most diverse state parks systems in the nation and protects and enhances natural resources and outdoor recreational opportunities throughout Massachusetts. DCR is a dynamic agency, and is one of the largest park systems in the nation. The DCR system includes over 450,000 acres of parks, forests, water supply protection lands, beaches, lakes, ponds, playgrounds, swimming pools, golf courses, skating rinks, trails and parkways. The Department of Conservation and Recreation seeks applicants for the position of Seasonal Master, Fisheries Research Vessel (Boat Captain). Salaries are based on a schedule of 40 hours worked, outdoors in all types of weather. Schedule to be assigned will include one weekend day, Four 10 hr shifts/week, extended hours may be required, schedule may vary depending on seasonal operational needs Specific Duties: -Navigate vessels, inshore and offshore, tow and transport persons, equipment and material. -Clean, maintain, recommend, oversee, supervise and develop specifications for refitting of aluminum, steel and fiberglass vessels and shipboard systems, including diesel, gas engines, outboard/inboard drives. -Operate equipment for the navigation, operation and maintenance of vessels. -Supervise the loading and unloading of vessels with knowledge of the carrying capacity and limits of stability of each vessel. -Schedule and coordinate work/activities between marine and shore base facilities. -Participate in and/or supervise the maintenance, towing and installation of docks, wharves, piers, floats and associated hardware. -Prepare work list for periodic hauling, blocking, overhauling and repair of vessels and equipment. -Prepare and maintain records and logs of maintenance, areas patrolled, materials transported, inventory of supplies and requisitions. -Patrol harbor and coastal areas, aid in enforcement of laws, rules and regulations. Contact proper authorities in emergency situations. -Provide technical assistance to researchers, engineers, planners and contractors, regarding marine and adjacent base facilities and the operations of same. -Assist persons and vessels in distress. -Assist in SCUBA and underwater operations on agency vessels and facilities. -Other related duties as assigned Qualifications: -Knowledge of the terminology, coding, symbols and standard abbreviations used in marineradio communications. -Knowledge of the laws, rules and regulations governing the use of marine radiocommunications equipment. -Knowledge of standard nautical terminology. -Knowledge of the types and uses of navigation devices. -Knowledge of the principles and techniques of navigation. -Knowledge of the methods, techniques, and safety practices used in the operation ofsmall marine vessels. -Knowledge of the methods of operating marine radio communications equipment. -Knowledge of the laws, rules and regulations governing the movement of vessels throughdrawbridges and navigable waters. -Knowledge of the standard maintenance procedures followed in connection with marinevessels equipped with diesel engines. -Knowledge of the types and uses of marine vessels. -Knowledge of the types and uses of emergency firefighting equipment. -Skill in the operation of marine vessels of 40 feet or more in length. -Ability to read and understand such documents as technical manuals, lubrication charts,maps, etc. -Ability to make decisions and act quickly in emergency situations. -Knowledge of the capabilities and limitations of marine vessels in relation to varioussea conditions. -Ability to conduct training or instruction. -Ability to plan, assign and coordinate the activities of others. -Ability to prepare repair specifications and work orders. MINIMUM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS: Applicants must have at least one year of full-time, or equivalent part-time, experience in the operation and maintenance of research vessels.
