State of Massachusetts Supervisor of Chemistry Lab - Microbiologist IV in Boston, Massachusetts
The Lemuel Shattuck Hospital, a part of the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH), is seeking an experienced and dynamic Supervisor, Microbiologist IV for our Chemistry Lab. This role involves overseeing daily laboratory operations within the Chemistry Department and ensuring effective communication with reporting staff, the Lab Director, Physician Director, and Chief Clinical Officer. In times of staffing shortages, the incumbent may assist in Hematology, Blood Bank, or Microbiology. Additionally, the Supervisor participates in performance improvement activities across various departments and provides oversight to the Reference Lab (LabCorp). /_Hours:_/6:30am-3pm, working 1 weekend per month, holiday rotation required /_Duties and Responsibilities (these duties are a general summary and not all inclusive):_/// * Perform patient testing in Chemistry, Urinalysis, Hematology/Coagulation, and Transfusion Medicine using standard laboratory equipment. * Determine and recommend modifications to procedures/methodologies to ensure accuracy and quality of test results. * Communicate with reference laboratories regarding sample handling, test results, and specimen transportation. * Confer with reference laboratories on test validation, new testing procedures, and billing/pricing issues. * Prepare reagents, controls, and calibrators for laboratory testing. * Inspect, calibrate, and perform minor repairs on laboratory equipment and instrumentation. * Advise physicians and nurses on appropriate tests to enhance patient care quality. * Inform medical staff of test result significance. * Evaluate test requests and validity of results, including those from reference labs. * Maintain required records for quality control, instrument maintenance, and regulatory documentation. * Ensure staff competency through observation, analysis, and proficiency testing. * Participate in employee evaluations and initiate disciplinary procedures as needed. * Participate in staff interviews for vacancies. * Compile data for performance improvement and CAP survey reports, and ensure timely submissions. * Oversee operational and capital budgets for the Chemistry lab. * Monitor supplies and work with vendors to ensure uninterrupted lab operations. * Prepare and provide feedback on capital equipment procurement and reagent agreements. * Evaluate future equipment needs and provide detailed information to the Director of Clinical Support Services. * Monitor patient testing results via LIS and ensure proper documentation. * Compile statistics for monthly test volumes, inventory, budget, and quality control data. * Maintain adequate inventory of testing materials and consumables. * Attend relevant meetings, seminars, and conferences to stay updated on new diagnostic testing trends. * Provide information to public and agencies for medical or public health decisions. * Ensure a safe working environment by monitoring compliance with safety and infection control policies. * Rotate holidays and weekends as required. * Provide administrative support to the Director and cover their absence when needed. * Work flexible shifts as required by the Laboratory Supervisor. /_Required Qualifications:_/// * Understand principles and practices in Chemistry, Hematology, Microbiology, Coagulation, Urinalysis, and Blood Bank. * Apply safety and infection control procedures in a clinical laboratory. * Utilize techniques and methodologies for clinical lab tests. * Operate instrumentation and equipment used in clinical labs (e.g., Abbott Axsym, Dade Excel, Bayer Clinitek). * Handle hazardous chemicals and infectious waste properly. * Perform quality control, linearity, and instrument calibration. * Follow clinical lab policies and procedures. * Comply with federal and state lab regulations. * Work with chemical properties and characteristics used in clinical labs. * Use lab terminology and abbreviations. * Collect, handle, and transport specimens correctly. * Assess specimen acceptability and lab data applicability. * Follow and give precise oral and written instructions. * Interact tactfully with others. * Exercise sound judgment and work independently. * Foster harmonious working relationships. * Explain unit policies, procedures, and guidelines. * Prepare fiscal, workload, and quality assurance reports. * Write clearly and concisely. * Be computer literate /_Preferred Qualifications:_/ * Familiar with organizational policies and procedures /_About the Lemuel Shattuck Hospital:_/ Lemuel Shattuck Hospital is a fully Joint Commission accredited teaching facility that provides acute, subacute, and ambulatory care to patients referred by public agencies and private sector providers. Shattuck Hospital’s services help economically and socially disadvantaged patients to get high quality, cost-effective care from a staff that respects their dignity. Located in the heart of Boston’s Jamaica Plain neighborhood, the Shattuck Hospital includes 248 inpatient beds including 95 Psychiatric beds and 29 Correctional Health beds. In addition, the Shattuck has a full outpatient clinic with many specialties that offers treatment to patients of the Department of Mental Health as well as Department of Correction and House of Correction inmates and community patients. The Shattuck hospital is on the forefront of substance use disorder treatment including a Suboxone clinic serving 200 patients. Based on assignment, applicants must meet related Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act (CLIA) requirements for High Complexity Testing. Substitutions: I. A Bachelor's degree with a major in microbiology, molecular biology, medical technology, biology or related scientific field may be substituted for two (2) years of the required (A) experience. II. A Master's degree with a major in microbiology, molecular biology, medical technology, biology or related scientific field, may be substituted for three (3) year of the required (A) experience. III. A Doctoral degree with a major in microbiology, molecular biology, medical technology or related scientific field, may be substituted for four (4) years of the required (A) experience. Salary placement is determined by a combination of factors, including the candidate’s years of directly related experience and education, and alignment with our internal compensation structure as set forth by the Human Resources Division’s Hiring Guidelines.
