About the Role

As a UX Designer at Cengage, you will determine how customers discover, consider, use, and interact our products by participating in strategy, research, design, innovation, implementation, and optimization. You'll bring both the art of design and the science of human interaction to challenge the status quo and deliver an unparalleled experience.

Strategic:

You’ll define the balance between an appealing interface, and an intuitive, and easy to use experience. Responsive strategy and accessibility are fundamental to our work, and you’ll work closely with engineers to maintain the integrity of our user experience across all devices. During the design process, you’ll serve as a “go to” with in-depth knowledge of UX practices and standards, and you’ll act as a user-advocate, subjecting early stage designs to usability testing and SME review, and offering implementation suggestions from a user-centered design perspective.

You will use both qualitative and quantitative research to inform your design decisions, and you’ll regularly attend and participate in user studies to validate product concept and designs (then iterate based on customer feedback).

Implementation:

  • As the UX project lead, you’ll direct the visual hierarchy, behavior, and appearance of all new features and enhancements in our products. Your deliverables will include low-fidelity wireframes, behavioral specifications, personas, user flows, testable prototypes, high-fidelity mock-ups and design guidelines. Attention to detail is key as you’ll ensure consistency in our end-to-end user flows and align the visual presentation to existing brand standards across Cengage products.

Required Skills and Background:

  • Online portfolio of your work (designs, prototypes, and sketches) that you are excited to share.

  • 5+ years experience producing compelling websites, web applications, responsive web apps, eCommerce applications, emails, landing pages, etc.

  • Proactive and driven within a collaborative environment

  • Ability to self-manage scope and deadlines in a fast-paced agile environment.

  • Experience defining, implementing and working with corporate design and web standards.

  • Experience designing for disabled users and familiarity with WCAG standards.

  • Proficient in Sketch, Photoshop, Illustrator, and InVision.

  • Basic understanding of HTML5 and CSS3.

  • Undergraduate degree (or equivalent professional experience) in Visual Design, Web Design, Interactive Media, Computer Science, or a related technical field or 5+ years of equivalent practical experience.
