We’re thrilled to announce the first Director of Photography (DP) position within our Video Services team in either our Newburyport, MA or Boston, MA office locations. This is an exciting opportunity for a talented cinematographer to help create engaging and original content for Matter’s extensive roster of clients as well as for Matter’s own internal marketing efforts. This person will work alongside and among our award-winning Creative Services team on a variety of on-location and in-studio productions, across many industries, including Technology, Healthcare & Life Sciences, Consumer & Lifestyle, Professional Services, Manufacturing & Industrial, Environmental & Sustainability, Food, and Higher Education.

The DP is the crucial creative voice for each production by helping craft the visual style and mood for the entire project. From tabletops to talent, interviews to docu-style run-and-gun, and everything in between, your trained eye and expertise will help elevate Matter’s visual style to the next level. To be successful as the DP, you should be detail-oriented and demonstrate exceptional creative intelligence. Outstanding candidates are easily inspired, have a strong vision, and the ability to effectively communicate the vision to the greater Video and Creative teams.


  • Work strategically to understand client goals and objectives to consistently create visually interesting and engaging branded content

  • Coordinate with director and greater creative team to form an overall vision for each projec

  • Research location details, sun position, weather conditions, props, etc. at the prospective production sites

  • Coordinating required equipment, tools, props, etc. for each project

  • Organize locations, studio, and/or backdrops for each project

  • Oversee lighting, shot selection, aperture, angles, and technical specs for each production

  • Train crew to safely use new equipment

  • Attend cast rehearsals and provide advice where appropriate

  • Join regular project/workflow meetings to gain insight on projects’ status and inform the creative team of adjustments in priority

  • Work with post-production editors to ensure the desired effects are preserved and the mood of the branded piece is achieved

  • Help develop and maintain video production processes and equipment

  • Keep up to date with advances in the film/media and advertising industry, attend workshops and training sessions where appropriate

    Along with a great portfolio of work, your previous experience and attributes will include:

  • 5+ years of relevant production experience for brands, either independently, in an agency or in-house creative/production/media department

  • Strong command of Canon, Alexa, RED and/or Blackmagic cinema cameras

  • A passion for film and great attention to detail

  • Ability to direct teams and organize filming operations

  • The ability to work long hours and while traveling

  • Expanded network of relationships with industry professionals

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills

  • Ability to work on multiple projects independently as well as part of a team

  • A self-motivated, strong problem-solver and fast learner with a positive attitude

  • Demonstrated project management skills in a deadline-driven environment

  • Ability to maintain consistent, open dialogue with Creative team members, managers, and clients via strong verbal and written communications

  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize effectively while working in a fast-paced environment

  • Strong brain-storming and problem-solving skills, ability to resolve conflicts

  • Desire and willingness to continually learn and improve through numerous professional development opportunities

  • Familiarity with workflow management and collaborative software a plus

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite

  • Bachelor’s or associate degree in film, production, or similar discipline
