The COVID Eviction Legal Help Project is accepting applications for Intake Worker positions to provide administrative support to staff attorneys representing income eligible tenants in Massachusetts facing eviction due to the impact of COVID-19. These are grant-funded positions through June 30, 2021. Extension of an additional nine months of employment beyond this date is contingent on the availability of funding. ABOUT THE PROJECT The COVID Eviction Legal Help Project was formed to expand the capacity of existing legal aid organizations in Massachusetts to respond to the increased eviction filings expected with the lifting of the Massachusetts eviction moratorium. Teams of non-lawyer advocates and lawyers will be hired by local legal aid programs and guided by a supervising attorney to provide support and legal representation at different stages of the eviction process. Intake workers will be an integral part of this statewide initiative. SUMMARY OF THE INTAKE WORKER POSITION Under the oversight of a supervising attorney, the intake worker shall provide a range of client screening and administrative tasks that promote effective client practices. PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES - Client intake (screen applicants for eligibility for services). - Explain intake and related procedures to potential and current clients and ensure compliance with standard procedures. - Enter all relevant information into the agency client database. - Conduct a conflict-of-interest check on all potential clients. - Set up necessary client files, and forward intake and related information on to the appropriate attorney or paralegal for follow-up action. - Provide face-to-face and phone translation services for clients as needed. - Translate letters, documents, etc. as needed. - Answer and transfer telephone calls. - Attend and participate in project team meetings. - Work collaboratively with others on the project team to promote effective communication, coordination and teamwork. - Perform other duties as needed consistent with the provision of quality client services. BACKGROUND AND QUALIFICATIONS - High school degree or equivalency. - Capacity to identify and analyze legal and other problems. - Ability to do word processing, spreadsheet and data entry. - Demonstrated concern for and commitment to the goals of legal services and to working for low-income people. - Experience working with interpreters, or fluency in language(s) in addition to English strongly preferred. - Good telephone and reception skills.
