Dana-Farber Cancer Institute Senior Research Contracts Associate in Brookline, Massachusetts

This position's work location is fully remote with occasional onsite time as needed. The selected candidate may only work remotely from a New England state (ME, VT, NH, MA, CT, RI).

This Senior Research Contracts drafts, reviews, and executes a high-volume of research agreements, including the most complex, and manages the agreements for a limited number of consortiums and/or strategic alliances. For complex agreements, the role serves as a key contributor to a negotiation team in partnership with licensing and/or business development BODFI staff. This role is a member of the Research Contracts Team.

Agreements/Transactions

  • Utilizes all institutional templates, and develops draft agreements when a suitable template is not available.

  • Independently negotiates all agreement types, but primarily is focused on complex types, such as sponsored research agreements and IP licenses. Works on exclusive options, exclusive licenses, and financial term sheets in partnership with licensing or business development team members, and in some cases, BODFI Leadership and Office of General Counsel.

  • Integrates knowledge of IP law and contract law into negotiation of all contracts.

  • Resource for teammates on contract law and policies.

PI/Faculty Relationship Management/Communication

  • Responds to inquiries from principal investigators (PIs), Faculty, and other parties.

  • Drafts complex written messages.

  • Coordinates and attends meetings with PIs and other parties, with lead or co-lead role in all such discussions.

  • Monitors adherence to contractual terms with third parties’ post-execution of sponsored research and license agreements.

  • Articulates institutional policies and practices to PIs and external parties.

  • Bachelor’s degree in biological or chemical science is strongly preferred. JD degree required.

  • 3 years of research contracts experience at an academic institution and/or life sciences company required.

  • Deal sheet required to qualify and assess experience with transactions.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Comprehension of science and translation of medical innovation. Knowledge of DFCI technology.

  • Remains current on knowledge of federal, state and institutional policy relevant to duties and responsibilities; helps to update the foregoing.

  • Detail-oriented.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills required. Communicates proactively.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills.

  • Demonstrated independence with the ability to identify problems and recommend solutions.

  • Ability to work as a member of a negotiation team including partnering with licensing and business development colleagues within more complex knowledge base as co-lead or lead negotiator.
