Under the general supervision of the Manager of Pathology, the Pathologist Assistant supports the Department by:

  • Prosecting surgical and biopsy specimens.

  • Facilitating the activities that occur upon the request of an autopsy.

  • Assist with frozen sections, special procedures and research activities.

  • Participates in Quality improvement activities.

  • Updates and develops Departmental policies and procedures.

Job Description:

Essential Duties & Responsibilities including but not limited to:

1) Prosection of large and small surgical and biopsy specimens – includes an accurate gross description for all specimens, selects appropriate tissue for histologic examination. Photographs specimens as required.

2) Insures all paperwork is correct and in order prior to the start of autopsy procedures. Assists and facilitates in the performance of the autopsy to meet the expectations on the pathologist and clinician. Assists in training of Dieners, enabling themto perform autopsies in accordance with departmental policies and within acceptable time frames.

3) Accessions surgical and biopsy specimens. Assures that specimens are properly packaged, labeled and fixed. Corrects deficiencies following departmental standards. Notifies departments that submit specimens that are improperly labeled, requisitioned or fixed. Documents all corrective actions to support CQI efforts and insure accuracy of pathology reports.

4) Assists with the performance of Frozen Sections of specimens in the Operating Room. Produces high quality sections to enable proper diagnosis within required time frames.

5) Prepares specimens that require special handling for analysis. Packages, labels and ships specimens to approved reference labs.

6) Assists in the procurement of tissue for approved research projects.

7) Updates and develops Departmental Policies and Procedures for specimen handling, autopsy prosection and infection control. All procedures must comply with CAP, JCAHO, OSHA and other regulatory agency standards. Revises policies when procedures change and documents that appropriate personnel have been informed of any changes relevant to their position.

8) Incorporates Lahey Clinic Guiding Principles , Mission Statement and Goals into daily activities.

9) Complies with all Lahey Clinic Policies.

10) Complies with behavioral expectations of the department and Lahey Clinic.

11) Maintains courteous and effective interactions with colleagues and patients.

12) Demonstrates an understanding of the job description, performance expectations, and competency assessment.

13) Demonstrates a commitment toward meeting and exceeding the needs of our customers and consistently adheres to Customer Service standards.

14) Participates in departmental and/or interdepartmental quality improvement activities.

15) Participates in and successfully completes Mandatory Education.

16) Performs all other duties as needed or directed to meet the needs of the department.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: Graduate of an accredited Pathologist Assistant program, Bachelors degree or equivalent related education and experience with emphasis on human anatomy.

Licensure, Certification, Registration: None required.

Skills, Knowledge & Abilities:

  • Fine motor skills with good hand eye coordination.

  • Must be detail oriented.

  • Knowledge of human anatomy and organ systems.

  • Must have the ability to use a PC, PC based software and computerized equipment.

  • Effective oral, written and interpersonal skills.

  • In the absence of any of these skills, demonstrates the ability to be thoroughly trained to meet organizational standards.

Experience: Graduate of an accredited Pathologist Program
