About the Job

The perfusionist is responsible for supporting, supplementing, monitoring and treating a patient’s cardiopulmonary and circulatory system using extracorporeal circulation equipment.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities including but not limited to:

  • Assembles and operates all cardio-pulmonary bypass and ancillary equipment whenever it is necessary to augment or replace the patient’s cardiopulmonary, pulmonary or circulatory function.

  • Assesses the patient to prepare a perfusion care plan.

  • Performs an ongoing assessment during the intraoperative period to implement optimal perfusion following protocols and the surgeon’s preferences.

  • Evaluates the hemodynamic, renal, metabolic and coagulation patient status using observation, calculations of hemodynamic status, laboratory and POC testing results. Collaborates with the surgeon and anesthesiologist to coordinate case management.

  • Is responsible for the intra-aortic balloon pump during cardiac surgery

  • Manages autotransfusion equipment,.

  • Identifies the need for blood component therapy and administers blood and blood products under the direction of a physician following Lahey Clinic blood product policies.

  • Is responsible for intra-operative anticoagulation monitoring, analysis and management.

  • Provides POC testing as appropriate and complies with all CLIA and CAP guidelines.

  • As a member of the liver transplant team, performs veno-veno bypass, autotransfusion and rapid infusion.

  • Maintains accurate and thorough documentation of cardiopulmonary bypass.

  • Incorporates Lahey Clinic Guiding Principles , Mission Statement and Goals into daily activities.

  • Complies with all Lahey Clinic Policies.

  • Complies with behavioral expectations of the department and Lahey Clinic.

  • Maintains courteous and effective interactions with colleagues and patients.

  • Demonstrates an understanding of the job description, performance expectations, and competency assessment.

  • Demonstrates a commitment toward meeting and exceeding the needs of our customers and consistently adheres to Customer Service standards.

  • Participates in departmental and/or interdepartmental quality improvement activities.

  • Participates in and successfully completes Mandatory Education.

  • Performs all other duties as needed or directed to meet the needs of the department.

    Minimum Qualifications:

    Education: Graduate of a School of Perfusion.

    Licensure, Certification, Registration: Certified, or certification eligible by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion.

    Licensed, or licensure eligible in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts

    Skills, Knowledge & Abilities: In the absence of any of these skills, demonstrates the ability to be thoroughly trained to meet organizational standards.

    Experience: New graduates are eligible if they meet the licensure, certification requirements.
