Job Description:

The summer intern will join the Comparative Medicine, In Vivo Services team within the Preclinical and Translational Sciences organization. The intern will

  • Participate in all three pillars of Comparative Medicine: vivarium, regulatory and technical

  • Have the opportunity to learn about various study designs (pharmacology, pharmacokinetics, toxicology, etc.)

  • Assist in in vivo studies supporting multiple therapeutic areas.

  • Maintain a core focus on learning and demonstrating rodent in vivo technical skills, the intern will learn basic vivarium operations concepts including husbandry, veterinary care, and welfare regulations

  • Participate in Vivarium Lean Management and Operational Excellence initiatives and obtain Lean Six Sigma certification at the white belt and yellow belt levels.

  • Attend convened Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) meetings and interact with internal and external members to learn about regulatory and AAALAC accreditation requirements governing the way we work

  • Shadow the IACUC administrator working with Takeda Principal Investigators and Takeda research staff members on IACUC protocol creation, amendments, post approval monitoring (PAM) and training compliance

  • Participate on Operational Excellence projects helping to bridge workflows and streamline efficiencies for Takeda’s Animal Care and Use Program

  • Examples of individual projects may include: creating presentation to the In Vivo Husbandry and Research Teams titled “New Advances (2022-2025) Paving the 3Rs/Animal Welfare Road”

  • Create multiple dashboards able to track real-time animal usage across Takeda projects and protocols, and CRO animal welfare approved lists and grades

  • Select two internal workstreams to evaluate and streamline; and working alongside the Attending Veterinarian to develop a comprehensive vet care and humane endpoint training presentation.

Internship Development Opportunities:

  • Assist in animal studies supporting multiple therapeutic areas of Takeda including Oncology, Neuroscience, GI and Vaccines

  • Assist in sample processing, sample transfer, and study updates with multiple groups

  • Responsible for integrity of data

  • Track reporting deliverables and graph real-time data

  • Hands on introduction to in vivo manipulations and techniques

  • Introduction to Takeda’s animal regulatory and animal welfare landscape to include Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee participation and practice review

  • Receive hands-on training with autoclaves, washers, rodent husbandry practices, quality control activities, and other Vivarium operations

  • Introduction to various functions within R&D such as Pathology, PTS Imaging, Strategy & Operations, and Drug Discovery Units (DDUs)

  • Assist in archival of study data and specimens

  • Assist and participate in various Operational Excellence initiatives

Job Requirements:

  • This position will be Fully Onsite and require 4+ days in the Cambridge office per week.

  • Must be pursuing a Bachelors Degree with Animal Science/Biology coursework.

  • Basic understanding of computer skills including MS Office (PowerPoint, Words, Excel)

  • Internet skills including use of e-mails, group messaging and information gathering

  • Highly reliable and a strong team player

  • Flexible with an attention to detail

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills

Internship Eligibility

  • Must be authorized to work in the U.S. on a permanent basis without requiring sponsorship

  • Must be currently enrolled in a degree program graduating December 2025 or later

  • The internship program is 10-12 weeks depending on the two start dates (June 2nd- August 29th) or (June 16th - August 22nd)

  • The intern must be able to commit to one of these time frames

  • Able to work full time 40 hours a week during internship dates

  • Takeda does not provide a housing stipend or relocation support for the U.S Summer Internship Program

U.S. Hourly Wage Range:

$21.00 - $46.00

The estimated hourly range reflects an anticipated range for this position. The actual hourly wage offered will depend on the candidate’s school year/level to be entered following completion of internship. The actual hourly wage offered will be in accordance with state or local minimum wage requirements for the job location.

U.S. internship benefits vary by location and may include:
