This position is based either in Boston, Massachusetts, Northbrook, Illinois, or San Francisco, California. Remote work from certain states may be permitted in accordance with Astellas’ Responsible Flexibility Guidelines. Candidates interested in remote work are encouraged to apply.

Purpose and Scope:

  • Management of collaborative and creative relationship with Astellas' alliance partners, mainly pre-POC R&D projects/products to maximize the value of the assets, increase effective alliances and mitigate potential risks.

  • Involvement in internal discussions on alliance projects to coordinate cross-functional collaboration and build One Astellas voices.

  • Supporting development of Alliance Management strategy based on above.

  • Contribution to contract review in pre-signing processes that are primarily led by Scouting & Transaction teams, especially in deal terms for post-closing operations and governance structure.

  • Establishment of internal systems related to maintenance of contract obligations, e.g. payment management and conflict check.

  • This role in the team takes a leading role for assigned projects.

Responsibilities and Accountabilities:

  • Takes leading roles for assigned projects in the following activities:

  • Establish and manage cross-functional governance committees.

  • Facilitate internal alignment and readiness prior to engaging partners; ensure operational plans and actions are consistent with alliance strategy.

  • Establish communication and decision-making protocols among alliance teams and with the partner; ensures contractually required communication occurs in a timely manner.

  • Accurately interpret contracts and manages contractual obligations; establish and monitor metrics and milestones; negotiate amendments to contracts; and manage conflict resolutions and escalation when necessary.

  • Develop and maintain trust-based partner relationships along with a long-term strategic view of the alliance.

  • Involve in contract negotiation led by Scouting and Transaction teams.

  • Provide junior members to with strategic advice based on enterprise-wide priorities and financial implications.

Required Qualifications:

  • Expertise in deal negotiation and post-deal management. Typically, 5+ years of customer/partnership related experience.

  • Thorough knowledge and demonstrated expertise in the pharmaceutical industry. Demonstrated understanding of operations and key organizational interfaces.

  • Observed strength and expertise in working within matric teams, including cross-cultural teams and of influencing without authority. Should have an understanding of, or experience working with a broad range of functions including commercial, business development, R&D, finance and legal.

  • Robust skill in presentation, written communication and negotiation in English (required) and Japanese (preferred)

  • Ability to network and accomplish tasks within a multi-cultural environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree (MBA/MS/PharmD/PhD/JD)

  • Business-related qualification (CPA/CMA/CFA)

  • Knowledge and/or ability to comprehend specific business matters relating to BD projects, e.g. financial model, financial/accounting/tax matters, IP matters, legal/contract matters etc.

  • ASAP or LES certification.
