Draper, an engineering research and development institution, is seeking an Associate Director in Cambridge, MA to lead the Strategic Avionics & Rad-Hard (RH) Electronics Program Area for the Strategic Guidance, Navigation and Control Business Area. The Associate Director of the Strategic Avionics & RH Electronics Program Area will be leading and managing a portfolio of large scale, complex, and cross functional projects associated with the design and development of new avionics, including an inertial measurement unit, for the Fleet Ballistic Missile supporting the US Navy’s Submarine Launched Ballistic Missile program. This role will be working closely with senior leaders in the Strategic Systems Program Office and across Draper to develop and implement the strategy to allow successful execution of the new avionics and RH electronics required to support the overall Program. Specific responsibilities for the Strategic Avionics & RH Electronics Associate Director will be the following:

  • Develop, implement, and oversee the execution of a strategy for the Strategic Avionics & RH Parts program area within Strategic Systems focused on the design and development of the MK6 LE2 avionics and parts.

  • Provide leadership required to implement the Strategic Avionics & RH Parts strategy through the program office directors, engineering leadership, and supporting staff

  • Management of all cost, schedule, and technical aspects of the Strategic Avionics & RH Parts program area including serving as the primary customer interface.

  • Ensure the Strategic Avionics & RH Parts program area meets all contractual requirements throughout execution, including the development of appropriate processes to ensure requirements are consistently met.

  • Provide consistent and timely reporting of status of Program Area to senior leadership supporting overall business cadence including Weekly and Monthly Program Reviews by developing and maintaining appropriate metrics and key performance indicators for Program Area.

  • Successfully recruit and retain a highly talented and diverse team of program managers to help manage overall execution and work with engineering leadership to support the hiring, training, development, and retention of the engineering staff required to execute the program activities.

  • Lead the design and development of the portfolio of radiation hardened electronics required to support the avionics and IMU design

  • Develop and maintain relationships with key stakeholders in government and industry to help build the industrial base required to provide the electronic parts for the program

  • Successfully coordinate and align with other program areas and internal research and development activities to leverage development of core technology enablers to help mature technologies in time to support program needs.

  • Lead the development of enabling processes and tools to support the design, development, and test activities for the highly complex avionics design.

  • Support the development and flow down of requirements supporting the MK6 LE2 design specific to the avionics design.

  • Support the development of the overall Systems Integration and Test approaches for the MK6 LE2 Program including development of the infrastructure required to support.

Technical Qualifications

  • BS in Engineering or Science field is desired; Advanced degree preferred

  • Broad technical knowledge of strategic guidance, navigation and control technologies and requirements

  • Previous experience and technical knowledge of Strategic Systems Programs and Submarine Launched Ballistic Missile technology is highly desired

  • Experience with model-based engineering methodologies

  • Experience with both hardware and software design and development methodologies

Leadership Qualifications:

  • 10-20 years of experience within a leadership / management role managing complex technology projects and large-scale systems

  • Effective collaboration skills to be a key contributing member of Draper’s Senior Leadership Team

  • Experience building relationships with functional leaders across an organization and ability to collaborate with stakeholders to understand the business’ current state and develop data-driven insights that can drive organizational-wide goals and strategies

  • Possesses excellent business judgment, strong written and oral communication skills, and a practical, common-sense approach to getting things done

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with an ability to make data-driven decisions

  • Ability to hold themselves and others accountable to high standards of success

  • Prior DoD experience and knowledge

  • Current relationships with the Navy/Strategic partnerships as it relates to Draper’s existing work is strongly desired

    Security Requirements:

  • Current in scope Top Secret security clearance with SCI eligibility is required
