Position Description:

Harvard University Information Technology (HUIT) is a community of IT professionals committed to delivering service and technological solutions in support of teaching, learning, research and administration. For those interested in remote work, this role can be primarily remote. We also have beautiful on-campus space in the heart of Harvard Square for employees who choose to be on-site.

As a member of the HUIT Research Administration and Compliance Systems team, and reporting to the Senior Director, the Associate Director will work to create an optimal work environment for a high-performing team devoted to delivering high-quality IT solutions to our partners. Harvard University’s research portfolio relies on a set of reporting and software solutions, both custom and vendor-provided, supporting the research life-cycle. The team is responsible for designing and enhancing those IT systems and supporting the academic and administrative staff using the system to support their research projects. This position will also support emerging projects and initiatives, as needed.

With a trusted advisor and solutions-focused mindset, the Associate Director position main functions are:

Team Development and Management

  • Responsible for effective staff management, including hiring and orientation, training and development, workflow and performance management, and the promotion of an inclusive and innovative work environment

  • Provide leadership oversight for a team of 4-6 analysts, developers, and product managers responsible for the delivery of a variety of IT solutions benefitting the research administration and compliance community.

Strategy and Partnership

  • Participate in strategic planning for the application portfolio(s), including the development of product roadmap and timelines

  • Establish and maintain internal/external stakeholder relationships, focused on developing a deep understanding of their needs and objectives

  • Leverage steering and executive committees for decision-making, change management, and communications

  • Facilitate defining solutions with the appropriate stakeholders/customers

Project Management and Delivery

  • Responsible for project discovery

  • Oversee a portfolio of projects, ensuring resources, capacity and dependencies are managed for successful delivery

  • Occasionally expected to lead a project as a project manager

  • Identify, track, monitor and communicate project-related benefits, issues, scope changes, variances and contingencies that may arise during the implementation of IT projects, and that cannot be resolved by project team

  • Design, develop and monitor effective processes and systems for projects

  • Evaluate and assess metrics and project/program effectiveness

Additionally, the incumbent will:

  • Apply Harvard University’s IT technical standards and best practices

  • Abide by and follow the Harvard University IT technical standards, policies and Code of Conduct

  • Attend relevant conferences and training

  • Be a resource to the team and leadership including the Administrative Technology Services (ATS) department and across HUIT

  • Perform other duties and responsibilities, as assigned
