  • Able to create IT architecture documents.

  • Able to create requirements and project planning documents.

  • Understands security best practices.

  • Understands FERPA, PCI, GDPR, and Massachusetts state law regulatory compliance.

  • Solid programming skills in one of: Python, Go, Ruby, or Perl.

  • Broad knowledge of the deployment and management of systems (e.g. storage, cluster computing, networks, databases, virtualization systems).

  • Experience with Git.

  • Expert-level knowledge of Linux/Unix administration.

  • Working knowledge of Windows Server administration and Active Directory.

  • Experience with automation and configuration management (Puppet, Chef, Ansible, Terraform).

  • General Networking skills (OSI model, Layer 2 & 3 switching and routing, TCP/IP).

  • SAN and NAS knowledge, including iSCSI, NFS, and FC.

  • Performance tuning and troubleshooting complex systems.

  • Application load balancing solutions for scaling and HA.

Position Description:

We are seeking a talented engineer to join our new cloud architecture team, In this role you will design, develop and deploy new solutions which directly impact the entire Division of Continuing Education. As a cloud engineer you will be helping contribute and tune the direction the team heads toward.

The Cloud Engineer works with the Cloud Architect at the Division of Continuing Education (DCE) to implement networking, storage, and compute services, ensuring our solutions are secure, scalable, and aligned with established university practices.

  • Infrastructure as Code (IaC): Utilize IaC tools like AWS CloudFormation or Terraform to build infrastructure resources.

  • Develop templates that describe the desired state of the infrastructure, allowing for consistent and repeatable deployments that use best practices and optimize costs.

  • Migrate on-premise systems to cloud infrastructure.

  • Consult and collaborate with other IT departments and courses that use cloud infrastructure.

  • Networking and VPC: Build Virtual Private Clouds (VPCs). Ensure secure communication between resources through the implementation of subnets, route tables, security groups, and network access control lists (ACLs).

  • Compute Services: Collaborate with the Cloud Architect and DCE departments to make informed decisions about compute services such as Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud), Amazon Containers Service, and AWS Lambda based on workload requirements.

  • Storage Solutions: Collaborate with the Cloud Architect and DCE departments to make informed decisions about diverse storage options like Amazon S3 (Simple Storage Service), Amazon EBS (Elastic Block Store), and Amazon EFS (Elastic File System).

  • High Availability and Fault Tolerance: Distribute resources across multiple Availability Zones (AZs), build systems using Auto Scaling, Elastic Load Balancing, and other services to ensure fault tolerance.

  • Security and Identity Management: Configure security group, network ACL, and IAM (Identity and Access Management) policies as they relate to this role. Abide by Harvard University security best practices to protect networks, servers, data, and resources, complying with FERPA, PCI, GDPR, and Massachusetts state law.

  • Monitoring and Logging: Build monitoring using Amazon CloudWatch and other tools. Collect metrics, set alarms, and analyze logs to optimize performance.

Work Format:Hybrid (partially on-site, partially remote) Work Format Details:

This position will be based in Cambridge, MA. Hybrid workplace models in place at DCE with a minimum of 2 days per week on campus. DCE or department may adjust these as necessary or appropriate.

All remote work must be performed within one of the Harvard Registered Payroll States, which currently includes Massachusetts, Connecticut, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Vermont, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Virginia, Washington, and California (CA for exempt positions only). Certain visa types and funding sources may limit work location. Individuals must meet work location sponsorship requirements prior to employment.

About Us:The Division of Continuing Education (DCE) comprises four academic units serving about 30,000 domestic and international students annually, which allow Harvard to meet the learning needs of intellectually curious and highly motivated students from high school through retirement. Established in 1910, the Harvard Extension School (HES) offers access to Harvard faculty for a diverse community of adult learners, enrolling about 15,000 students. HES offers over 1,000 open enrollment courses — 85 percent of which are accessible online — and provides flexibility through noncredit, undergraduate, and graduate courses, including degrees, certificates, and a premedical program. The Harvard Summer School, founded in 1871, offers around 450 credit and noncredit courses both on the Harvard Campus and online, catering to 10,000 high school, college, and adult learners. Additionally, it offers more than 15 international study abroad programs, hosting up to 300 students each summer.
