COMMUNICATIONS OFFICER, Materials Science and Engineering (DMSE), to provide an overarching communications and development strategy based on the vision, goals, and objectives set by department leadership. Will oversee DMSE’s messaging (e.g., print, web, social media, physical displays, events); lead and execute a comprehensive communications, marketing, and outreach strategy promoting DMSE, building its identity, and confirming its leadership role in the field; conceptualize, write, and approve content for a variety of communications and outreach projects; lead and implement projects within budget and schedule; build vendor relationships; maintain understanding of industry trends across peer schools/departments; determine appropriate work methods, schedules, and priorities; and manage staff developing content for print/web/social media and departmental event planning and logistics.

Job Requirements

REQUIRED: bachelor’s degree in journalism or another writing-intensive field; five years’ experience in a communications-, outreach-, and marketing-related position in higher education and/or a nonprofit; experience managing staff and consultants in the field; excellent collaboration and written and oral communication skills; ability to deliver high-quality results while managing multiple projects; experience planning and executing complex events/meetings and effectively engaging with alumni, staff, faculty, industry, and other stakeholders; experience with graphic design and layout; ability to write in a variety of voices according to the audience/medium; experience with science and engineering writing and print and digital technologies, including HTML and content management systems, and ability stay current as they evolve; understanding of information architecture and requirements gathering practices and ability to gather and understand usage data; knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite and other graphics/design software, Microsoft Office, and database software; and ability to learn MIT systems/software. PREFERRED: master’s degree and knowledge of MIT Job #20582-812/22/21
