Biogen Director, Brain and Muscle Delivery for Biologics in Cambridge, Massachusetts
About This Role The mission of Biogen’s Biologics Drug Discovery group is to design, optimize, and develop high-quality differentiated protein therapeutics that become transformative medicines. This group is a part of the BTMS (Biotherapeutics and Medicinal Sciences) organization, Biogen’s modality unit. Using new technologies, cutting-edge science, and strong internal and external partnerships, we are leveraging our expertise in antibody discovery, protein and cell engineering, and biochemistry to transform the field of neuroscience. Biogen is looking for an innovative and dedicated scientist to become the Director/Head of the Tissue-Enhanced Delivery Technologies group, who will lead direct reports as well as a cross-functional effort to identify and validate novel methods for enhancing delivery of biologics, oligonucleotides (including ASOs), and gene therapy modalities to tissues including muscle and brain. /./ Approaches will include circumventing the blood-brain barrier (BBB) through the use of antibody-based transporters and other creative and innovative methods as part of a growing toolbox of capabilities. What You Will Do * Define the vision and strategy for the Tissue-Enhanced Delivery Technologies unit that enables the delivery of candidate molecules for the Biogen portfolio with enhanced distribution in tissues of interest such as the Central Nervous System (CNS) and muscle. Provide scientific leadership of a multi-disciplinary effort to identify and validate novel approaches for enhancing delivery of biologics, oligonucleotides, and gene therapies. Identify and establish new external partnerships that enhance our ability to leverage the potential for Biogen’s large-molecule and ASO modalities. Be a senior member of the Biologics Drug Discovery Leadership Team and key contributor to strategic initiatives within Biologics Drug Discovery, with impact across Biogen’s R&D organization, including refinement and implementation of key elements of Biogen’s biologics modality strategy and defining collaboration strategy to ensure delivery of externally sourced projects. Manage resources and budgets to ensure prioritization of activities across the Tissue-Enhanced Delivery Technologies unit to ensure delivery of novel, differentiated development candidates Build and manage an engaged and entrepreneurial group that contributes significantly to the development of novel platforms, advancement of the internal portfolio, and delivery of differentiated development candidates. *Who You Are You have a strategic vision with scientific innovation and seize accountability. You enjoy helping to grow others and lead change in agile organizations. You own a high degree of self-awareness, as well as the ability to establish and maintain an external network of academic and industrial thought leaders. Required Skills PhD or equivalent experience in Biochemistry, Cell Biology, Molecular Biology, Neuroscience/Neuropathology, or other relevant discipline 15+ years experience in biologics drug discovery and development Deep knowledge of the field of tissue-targeted delivery, particularly in the context of efforts to improve CNS exposure of therapeutic candidates Established track record of leading and developing people and teams *LI-RD8 Our mission to find therapies for neurological and rare diseases is a unique focus within our industry and this shared purpose is what connects us as a team. We work together to overcome obstacles and to follow the science. We are resilient as we strive to make an impact on our patients’ lives and on changing the course of medicine. Together, we pioneer. Together, we thrive.
