Position Description

I. OVERALL ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The HMS Director, Gender Equity for Faculty in Science identifies opportunities, develops programming, and leads efforts to support gender equity in career development, satisfaction, and fulfillment for HMS basic and social sciences faculty. They collaborate with faculty, the HMS Dean for Clinical and Academic Affairs, and others in the HMS Dean’s Office to achieve these objectives in supporting gender equity and positive faculty experience through development and implementation of programming that includes a focus on community building, mentoring and leadership training, and promoting the visibility and interests of women in science. Whereas the focus is on serving HMS faculty appointed to Quad departments, broader engagement of HMS faculty is possible and encouraged. The Director for Gender Equity for Faculty in Science will coordinate efforts with an elected Co-Director to fulfill these responsibilities. Anticipated time commitment, 2-3 hours per week on average.

II. REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS

The Director will report directly to the HMS Dean for Clinical and Academic Affairs (Anne Becker). Administrative support for programming will be provided by the Office for Clinical and Academic Affairs.

III . PRINCIPAL DUTIES

Work in collaboration with the Dean for Clinical and Academic Affairs and Office for Clinical and Academic Affairs to identify and prioritize strategies to promote gender equity and career development, satisfaction, and fulfillment for HMS basic and social sciences faculty.

These activities include developing, supporting, and organizing programming such as:

  • Support in organizing Female Leaders in Science (FLiS) network and monthly meetings, and maintaining email listserv and database of Quad-based female faculty to foster communication and networking efforts

  • Annual Women in Science Symposium

  • Planning additional HMS workshops and other training and career development programs such as occasional retreats

  • Bi-annual retreat

Collaborate and coordinate with faculty and other HMS offices and committees on key areas of need and opportunities in the gender equity in science space, including:

HMS science faculty to identify and discuss gender equity priority areas at HMS

  • Dean for Diversity and Community Partnership (Joan Reede), Office for Faculty Affairs ( OFA ), Joint Committee on the Status of Women ( JCSW ), and the Consortium of Harvard Affiliated Offices for Faculty Development and Diversity ( CHADD ) to identify and support common goals and opportunities for joint programming

  • The HMS Alumni Affairs and Development Office for fundraising to support Gender Equity

Administrative oversight

  • Oversee budget planning and allocation of resources to priority programming and activities

  • Prepare annual progress reports and draft a proposal, including agenda and budget for activities for the next year

    Basic Qualifications

A doctoral degree (PhD, MD, or MD/PhD degree)

Ladder faculty appointment at Harvard Medical School or affiliated hospital
