Sage Therapeutics Director, Medical Affairs Strategic Operations in Cambridge, Massachusetts

General Scope and Summary

Sage Therapeutics is searching for a collaborative, strategic, and experienced leader who will be responsible for providing business management support to the Medical Affairs organization. The successful candidate requires a high level of biopharma business acumen. The qualified candidate will have demonstrated results in leading and consulting with cross-functional teams in delivering large scale initiatives and balancing the management, communication, and execution of multiple high priority responsibilities at any given time. This role requires the ability to work collaboratively to ensure key initiatives are planned, integrated, communicated, and executed successfully. This position will report to and function under the guidance and direction of the Senior Director, Medical Affairs Operations.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Provide both strategic and project management oversight of high priority initiatives as identified by Medical Affairs Leadership that require a high level of organization, change management support, strategic thinking, and alignment of cross-functional leaders and teams to achieve the desired outcome.

  • Provide business management support to the Medical Affairs Leadership Team (MALT). Identify bottlenecks or issues and propose resolutions to enable core work to move forward on time.

  • Be a strategic thought partner to MALT members to advance key initiatives and execution of Medical Affairs plans, priorities, and attainment of goals. Ensure MALT members have the information and context needed to make well informed decisions, and those decisions are communicated effectively throughout the organization.

  • Develop content for executive level briefings and presentations.

  • Build capabilities for Advisory Board operations.

  • Provide key business management support to the Joint Medical Team and play a key role in progressing Alliance business matters and ways of working.

  • Lead the coordination and project management of the annual business and budget planning processes for Medical Affairs, including medical strategy, tactics, and annual operation plan (AOP) for collaboration and non-collaboration assets.

  • Maintain a view of the performance of the Medical Affairs business execution and its people and culture; be proactive, identify opportunities to make the team better, put steps in place to enhance business performance, improve operational efficiency, and address the evolving needs of our people and culture.

  • Lead and maintain effective budget management, forecasting, status of tactical plan execution, and medical agency vendor management​.

  • Oversee the advancement and development of analytics capabilities relevant to Medical Affairs business needs; track KPIs and enable reporting of required metrics utilizing relevant data science solutions, data visualization tools, and dashboards.

  • Enable benchmarking and best practices; introduce membership and project-based support for industry benchmarking to drive fit-for-purpose Medical Affairs capabilities​.

Experience, Education and Specialized Knowledge and Skills

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree.

  • 8+ years of pharmaceutical/biotech experience that includes proven results across Medical Affairs or R&D organizations and collaboration among cross-functional stakeholders.

  • Experience leading and facilitating high performing teams with the ability to influence without authority to deliver broad impact.

  • Ability to create strong relationships at the peer and senior leader levels.

  • Demonstrated experience leading high-profile initiatives that require gaining buy-in and alignment among multiple senior level-leaders and teams and holding them accountable to achieving timeline and quality standards in a fast-moving environment.

  • Direct experience with implementing short and long-term strategies and workstreams needed for the success of large-scale initiatives (including working teams through the change management process).

  • Excellent interpersonal and facilitation skills, the ability to develop important relationships with key stakeholders, good conflict management and negotiation skills, and the ability to analyze complex issues to develop relevant and realistic plans, programs, and recommendations.

  • Demonstrated ability to contribute to strategy and translate strategy into action, excellent analytical skills, and an ability to communicate complex issues in a simple way and to orchestrate plans to resolve issues and mitigate risks.

  • Expert knowledge of Smartsheet, PowerPoint, Excel, MS Project, Asana, and/or related project management tools.

  • Exceptional business verbal and written communication skills and skills for developing compelling executive level presentations.

  • Highly motivated, decisive, and results-oriented individual with the flexibility and creativity to excel in a rapidly growing and changing environment.
