Additional Qualifications and Skills:

We are looking for people who have:

  • Experience with computer based building control systems, mechanical and electrical systems operations and maintenance.

  • Strong analytical skills and knowledge of data collection and analyses.

  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills (written and verbal).

  • Project management skills; diplomacy, negotiation and consensus-building.

  • Experience with construction methods and material relating to Green Building technologies.

  • Demonstrated ability to interpret electrical and mechanical plans and specifications for building facilities

  • Proficient in building automation controls for complex building system, related presentation tools, energy accounting and management software.

  • Certified Energy Manager (CEM) designation preferred.

As an Energy and Facilities Manager you will:

  • Be responsible for the development and stewardship of the $4 million energy budget. Track usage and rate data and create financial projections year over year with an emphasis on continuous improvements.

  • Develop load building models to identify opportunities for conservation and cost savings.

  • Collaborate with Harvard Central Administration, Engineering & Utilities and Green Campus on common energy conservation measures (ECMs) and initiatives to monitor, measure, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions (GHG).

  • Work with the Senior Facilities Manager to evaluate and recommend improvements to all building systems, equipment, controls, metering and operating protocols. Develop specifications, solicit bids and manage approved mechanical, electrical and plumbing (MEP) projects up to $100k from mobilization to closeout; ensure building automation system (BAS) and MEP standards are developed and met; identify deficiencies and problems within warranty period.

  • Develop and implement energy management programs and/or energy savings projects, and write energy reports.

  • Responsible for HVAC upgrades, to include equipment modification and repairs.

  • Review drawings and specifications for capital projects, preparing comments and life cycle cost analysis.

  • Assist with management of all contracted trades, vendors, other University departments.

  • Serve as an active member of the University and HLS Green Teams, a volunteer group of staff and students working to promote sustainable behavior and technology and advance sustainability initiatives through HLS administration.

  • Assist Facility Managers in all daily activities and performs other duties as assigned.

  • Must be able to perform all duties in a facilities environment that includes exposure to loud noises, temperature extremes, inclement weather conditions, airborne particles, vibration, hazardous materials, stairs, ladders, confined spaces, etc.

  • Requires ascending, descending, moving, constantly repositioning oneself, etc. working from ladders, scaffolds, high-lifts, and in confined spaces; and moving and transporting objects weighing up to 65 pounds. Required to wear personal protective equipment and clothing when appropriate.

Working Conditions:

  • This position is considered part of the critical operations personnel and must be available 24/7 for emergency response as needed.

  • Work and indirectly manage 2nd shift building operator activities related to alarms, customer requests, off hours’ maintenance and emergencies including nights, weekends and holidays.

Job Summary:

Reporting to the Senior Facilities Manager, the Facilities Energy Manager works as a member of the Harvard Law School (HLS) Facilities team. This position creates a campus-wide energy program covering 23 buildings comprising 1.3 million sq. ft. of facilities space and works to increase the visibility of energy initiatives, while assuring accountability and commitment from core parts of the organization. They are responsible for providing leadership, inspiration, and fostering teamwork across the internal and external Harvard University community. This role creates an atmosphere where people can exchange ideas, incorporate best practices, and promote creativity.
