Position Description

The Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health is recruiting an Imaging and Microscopy Specialist to help launch and manage a new shared microscopy facility with high-end microscopes. Based in the School’s Department of Immunology and Infectious Diseases ( IID ) but supported as a cross-departmental resource, the successful candidate will be actively involved in the facility’s scientific operations and will provide administrative oversight. Additionally, this person will manage a new Lattice light-sheet Microscope which will be placed in an existing Biosafety level 3 (BSL3) core facility at the Harvard Chan School.

The successful candidate will work closely with Dr. Sarah Fortune (Immunology and Infectious Diseases), Dr. Tomas Kirchhausen (Cell Biology, HMS ), Dr. Kari Nadeau (Environmental Health), and Dr. Brendan Manning (Molecular Metabolism) to: 1) develop standard operating procedures (SOPs) to manage access and use of a range of microscopes that will be hosted in the facility, 2) maintain the microscopes and provide training on their use, 3) advise users on appropriate imaging modalities and support image analysis, and 4) ensure compliance with all safety protocols.

This person will manage the financial aspects of the facility, including developing a multi-year business plan, budgeting, rate setting, and reporting. These activities will be conducted in close coordination with the departmental finance team.

The successful candidate will hold a PhD in a relevant field and have excellent technical skills in microscopy and image analyses. The ideal candidate will have excellent organizational and time management skills, flexibility, and a willingness to work in a dynamic and fast-paced environment. The candidate will be detail-oriented and able to manage competing tasks and priorities. Ideally this person will have prior experience in an academic research environment.

Candidates interested in securing independent funding to devote a small percentage of their time to imaging-related methods development will be considered.

Responsibilities:

● Maintain and provide training to users on a range of departmental microscopes

● Execute experiments in the microscopy facility and the BSL3

● Advise on the right imaging modality for experiments

● Advise on image processing and image analysis

● Work with team members, collaborators, administrators to support research activities

● Ensure ethical compliance of research, prepare study protocols for Institutional Review Boards, material transfer agreements and data access agreements, and other required documentation.

● Contribute to the scientific administration and information management, this includes meeting facilitation, organization and logistics for strategic and scientific activities.

● Work with the departmental finance team to manage facility financing including budgeting, rate setting, and reporting

● Maintain safety, practice safe work habits, and adhere to all institutional environmental and health safety guidelines and policies

● Complete annual biohazard/universal precaution safety training, as appropriate

● Undertake other responsibilities as required

Basic Qualifications

● PhD

● Significant expertise in multi-modal imaging and image analysis

● Ability to work independently and proactively, as well as collaboratively with research teams

● Demonstrated success working in a highly collaborative and complex environment

● Ability to be flexible, to multitask and to work in a fast-paced environment

● Strong interpersonal skills, including the demonstrated ability to train users and to build working relationships at all levels

● Excellent communication skills (oral and written)

● Strong work ethic and willingness to take ownership for wide-ranging responsibilities

Additional Qualifications

● Experience working with pathogens in a BSL3 environment a plus, but not required
