Other Preferred Qualifications

  • Solid experience with Windows, Linux, Red Hat, SQL, DNS, AD, F5, and email gateways, as well as Cisco UCS and VMware is preferred

  • Experience with on-premise, cloud, and hybrid storage is preferred

  • Experience planning and managing infrastructure upgrades, new server implementations, and migrations is preferred

  • Excellent hardware and networking troubleshooting and root cause analysis skills is preferred

  • Highly energetic, self-motivated, keen attention to detail, and high work standards is preferred

  • Effective at prioritizing work and managing time of self and team in a high-pressure environment is preferred

  • Experience working with end users (technical and non-technical) in defining requirements; ability to communicate with diverse customer communities is preferred

Additional Information:This role is offered as a hybrid position (some combination of onsite and remote) where you are required to be onsite at our Boston, MA-based campus on a regular basis. Specific schedule will be determined between you and your manager.

The Manager, IT Systems Engineering, reporting to the Director, Cloud & Systems Engineering (CSE), is responsible for providing leadership and direction to an IT systems & storage engineering team within the 300-person Harvard Business School (HBS) IT organization. This is a hands-on technical position that includes both people and technical management. The manager will build, implement, and support compliant infrastructure and ensure continual improvement of systems and operational policies and procedures.

The ideal candidate will be a task and detail-oriented leader who has hands-on experience installing, configuring, and managing server platforms as well as technical staff. They will possess the ability to successfully implement changes in support, administrative, and system maintenance standards and processes for server operating systems and storage infrastructure. They are not afraid to roll up their sleeves and collaboratively problem-solve.

Responsibilities:

  • Recruit, develop, and provide technical and professional leadership to a team of systems and storage engineers; be accountable for planned team outcomes

  • Maintain solid working knowledge of key technologies such as Windows, Linux, Red Hat, storage, email gateways, F5 load balancers, and VMware

  • Read and be conversant regarding manuals, specifications, contracts, and statements of work, and general methods of infrastructure management

  • Communicate complex technical concepts effectively, verbally and in writing, to people with varying degrees of technical knowledge

  • Lead the design and implementation of complex enterprise solutions while ensuring compliance with Harvard’s policies and standards and industry best practices

  • Troubleshoot and resolve complex system issues as required

  • Maintain a productive, collaborative relationship with business sponsors and end users

  • Assume additional responsibilities as assigned
