    Job Description

LABORATORY SAFETY SPECIALIST, Environment, Health and Safety (EHS) Office, to support MIT’s academic and business objectives by serving as an integral member of a multidisciplinary EHS office that serves the whole MIT community, and coordinate aspects of laboratory safety programs. Will assist clients in finding solutions to problems; participate as a team member in support of an Institute-wide EHS management system that integrates compliance, sustainability, and education; integrate overall EHS programs into sustainable practices, policies, and guidelines; participate in and coordinate the development and implementation of general programs related to laboratory safety; conduct EHS program training; conduct evaluations and provide feedback to departments, labs, and centers (DLCs); keep abreast of pertinent regulations and developments in EHS and sustainability and communicate to DLCs as needed; oversee the Safe and Sustainable Labs Program for EHS, assisting labs with implementation of sustainable practices, and coordinating efforts to enable sustainability; support the Committee for the Assessment of Biohazards; communicate about BSP program status and matters among the EHS Office, EHS-MS DLC staff, and targeted members of the MIT community; develop a repository for lab safety information; and perform other duties as directed.

Job Requirements

REQUIRED: bachelor’s degree, preferably in EHS or related discipline, e.g., engineering, physical or biological sciences, or chemistry; three years’ relevant experience; general knowledge of EHS, with specific knowledge of lab safety and sustainability; good organizational, time-management, and written and oral communication skills; basic computer and database skills; service- and team-orientation; ability to collaborate with people, prioritize and complete projects/tasks in a timely manner, and work independently but seek advice as needed to ensure the best practical outcome for clients.
