The company has a pipeline of novel and highly differentiated antibacterial and rare disease product candidates focused on patients' unmet needs with multi-drug resistant (MDR) bacterial infections. Spero’s lead product candidate, tebipenem HBr, is an oral carbapenem being developed as the first oral carbapenem antibiotic for use in complicated urinary tract infections (cUTI) and acute pyelonephritis (AP). In September 2020, Spero announced positive top-line results from its Phase 3 ADAPT-PO clinical trial of tebipenem HBr in cUTI and AP. Spero is also developing SPR720, its oral antimicrobial agent in development for the treatment of nontuberculous mycobacterial (NTM) pulmonary disease, a rare orphan disease. Spero’s third product candidate, SPR206, is an IV-administered agent being developed as an innovative option to treat MDR Gram-negative bacterial infections.

We believe that our novel product candidates will have a meaningful impact on patient health and significant commercial applications for treating MDR infections in hospitals and community settings.

General Scope and Summary of Role

Spero Therapeutics is looking for a collaborative, enthusiastic partner responsible for identifying, developing, educating, and managing peer-to-peer relationships with a variety of healthcare providers, including infectious disease specialists, hospitalists, emergency medicine and urgent care providers, urologists, payers and other key stakeholders.

You will be accountable to engage in the highest quality scientific exchange regarding the science and clinical application of our products to variety of external stakeholders, as well as obtain important clinical insights about current practice, research priorities, treatment/competitive landscapes, and emerging clinical and scientific data. In addition, you are expected to build strong cross-functional relationships as well as provide meaningful subject-matter expertise to colleagues in Medical Affairs, Clinical Research, R&D, Market Access and Commercial, while maintaining full compliance with all relevant company, industry, legal, and regulatory requirements.

The Medical Science Liaison (MSL) is a field-based scientific and clinical expert who strategically supports the medical objectives of Spero’s products.

What You’ll Do

  • Be an expert in the science of Tebipenem HBr and the competitive landscape as well as an expert story teller of the science and value proposition story of this medicine

  • Develop and maintain professional relationships with prominent KOLs, healthcare providers and key decision makers as they relate to Spero’s products, including individual physicians, researchers, managed markets medical and pharmacy directors, hospital decision makers, formulary committees, consultant pharmacists, state Medicaid decision makers, IDN, and others

  • Engage and educate external stakeholders (KOLs, Payers, HCPs, organizations) via strategic discussions/presentations as it relates to medical/clinical, health economics and outcomes research data on Spero’s products as well as bring in relevant key learned insights from various audiences in a timely fashion

  • Assume a leadership role by teaching, coaching and mentoring team members and by assuming responsibility for special projects as they arise

  • Opportunity to publish, facilitate generation of RWE, and to manage phase IV, and IITs

  • Collaborate with Medical Affairs leadership to assess and deliver field-based insights to internal partners for consideration regarding corporate/brand strategy and material creation

  • Establish and cultivate early COEs with leading academic institutions

  • Support clinical trial recruitment and other research initiatives as appropriate

  • Identify and develop critical Medical Affairs scientific content and customer tools

  • Lead peer-to-peer educational programs to various groups and create strategic partnerships with leading organizations

  • Provide clinical support for local/regional advisory boards and congress meetings

  • Promote robust stewardship principles in the delivery of Spero product information as well as agnostic to Spero assets

  • Develop clinical pathways with leading institutions to help promote optimal patient care

  • Assist in development of advisory boards, symposia, and publication planning

  • Foster a collaborative yet compliant working relationship with Medical, Market Access and Commercial colleagues to ensure strategies and business plans are both patient- and business-focused

  • This is remote position

    What You’ll Need

  • Advanced degree (PhD, PharmD, MD, DO, RN) in ID/Virology or Urology required; if PharmD, ID residency a huge plus

  • 5+ years of experience as a Medical Science Liaison required; working knowledge of both outpatient and inpatient settings of care preferred

  • 7+ years of experience in the healthcare or pharmaceutical industry

  • Strong working knowledge of the compliance landscape in Medical Affairs and Pharma

  • Payer and IDN landscape knowledge preferred

  • Strong scientific and clinical acumen

  • Excellent communication and presentation skills

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and high emotional intelligence

  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and manage time efficiently

  • Experience in one or more of the following areas strongly preferred: infectious disease, antimicrobial stewardship, urology, urgent care, health economics and outcomes research, payer relations

  • Position requires up to 75% travel when it becomes safe again to travel; proximity to a major airport is desirable
