MRI TECHNOLOGIST

Job Description:

Position Summary:

Under the direction of the MRI Manager, a patient's MR exam is performed following established protocols. MRI exams are performed safely, accurately, appropriately, and in a timely manner. The patient's physical and emotional needs, while in the department, are met compassionately and competently.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities (including but not limited to):

Performs MR exams of the head, chest abdomen, extremities, or any MR exam procedure ordered by the radiologist.

Competent in the use of MR scan computers, consoles, laser cameras, Medrad Injector, and any patient monitoring devices.

Follows department protocols when performing MR exams or duties related to MR scanning.

Accurately follows directives given by the supervising radiologist.

Administers oral and intravenous contrast material.

Starts and monitors intravenous lines.

Develops and critiques fi1m.

Logs reactions to contrast in reaction book and computer.

Follows procedures for equipment start-up, calibration, and shutdown.

Takes call according to schedules and respond promptly to a request to scan. MRI technologists are expected to be at the hospital within 45 minutes of notification of an emergency request. Interacts professionally and courteously with patients, co-workers, and medical staff. Assists in training of student radiographers. Utilizes time productively and appropriately with respect to patient flow, room use, stocking of supplies, and clerical duties to increase department efficiency. Patient wait time is kept to a minimum. More than 90% of time worked is spent on productive tasks without supervisory prompting. Actively follows Universal Precaution guidelines with each patient. Attends yearly "Blood-borne pathogens/OSHA" in service. Practices aseptic technique when necessary. Produces an accurate computer and written record of each exam. Completes Meditech entries 98% of the time. Completes requisitions/film/jacket correlation accurately 98% of the time. Pursues continuing education by attending department and hospital-wide programs, regional seminars, and/or college courses. Meets ARRT standards. Meets MA State Licensing standards. Performs various other similar or related duties as required and/or directed by supervisors. Willingly performs tasks for which the employee is competent.

Minimum Qualifications:

Two years of formal radiologic technology training. Registered by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists License in Radiography by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Good interpersonal skills.

Physical Requirements & Environment:

Requires standing, bending, pushing, pulling, reaching above the head, moving about the department and hospital, and/or lifting more than 75% of the time. Exposure to radiation, strong magnetic field, infectious diseases, chemicals, and hazardous materials 75% of the time. Ability to hear conversation, and to comprehend and communicate in spoken and written English more than 75% of the time. Ability to wear protective equipment such as gloves, masks, gowns, and lead aprons. Ability to work and move about in confined spaces. Requires visual concentration at video display terminals up to 25% of the time.
