POSTDOCTORAL ASSOCIATE, Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE), to map the global distribution of cropland abandonment as part of the Terrer Lab (https://terrerlab.mit.edu/) and the Climate & Sustainability Consortium (https://impactclimate.mit.edu/) . Soils contain more carbon than plants and the atmosphere combined. Depletion of soil organic carbon stocks by intensive agricultural has however created a carbon debt of approximately 130 Gt, equivalent to all the CO2 emitted by the United States in the last twenty years. Since most nations have agreed to hold global average temperature rise to well below 2 °C, soils are now part of global-carbon agendas for climate-change mitigation and there is a consensus that cropland soils have the greatest potential for intervention and carbon sequestration. The sequestration potential of agricultural soils transitioning to grasslands, shrublands, and forests is largely unknown.
