  • Ability to work discreetly with sensitive and confidential data

  • Understanding of racial equity, healthcare disparities, and historical context of the U.S. medical profession

  • Ability to work collaboratively within diverse teams

  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal

This is a hybrid position based on our campus in Cambridge, MA. Salary Range: $69,404 - $113,558

Research and Analysis

  • Work closely with faculty PI and project lead on scope and design, including key deliverables, timelines, and work plan.

  • Coordinate with AMA archivists to find, identify, and review historical data, evaluating the influence of past policies such as the 1910 Flexner report.

  • Analyze historical harms resulting from past AMA policies and practices, including the societal contexts in which these harms occurred.

  • Produce regular memos with key takeaways from the review of existing literature and materials related to evidence of historical harm.

    Writing and Curation

  • Develop and implement recommendations internal to AMA for improving data collection and project deliverables.

  • Identify opportunities for restorative justice, for example using data analysis to address systemic barriers and promote health equity.

  • Coordinate with colleagues to develop a digital curated collection for publication on the IARA Race Research and Policy Portal (RRAPP), to include relevant historical resources and a reconciliation and restorative action plan to address historical harms.

    Project Coordination

  • Develop a comprehensive project roadmap for the proposed research.

  • Provide consistent and reliable project tracking, from setting and monitoring timelines and deliverables to ensuring coordination and improving workflow processes.

  • Participate in regular check-ins, strategy meetings, and debrief discussions with the project term.

  • Perform a variety of routine tasks related to organizing research materials and document control, day-to-day project support, and other duties as needed.

The Research Associate supports a multi-year research project of the Institutional Antiracism and Accountability (IARA) Project at Harvard Kennedy School’s Ash Center for Democratic Governance and Innovation. The Research Associate is a key member of the team investigating the archives of the American Medical Association (AMA) for race-related historical harms to understand their linkages to AMA practices. They contribute to research briefs to help dismantle systemic health inequities and create a compendium of institutional historical harms to enrich understanding in medical science.

Candidates must demonstrate experience with archival research, social science, or historical methods, familiarity with racial justice or racial equity, and a willingness to approach problems with creativity and collaboration.
