    Job Description

SENIOR FINANCIAL ASSISTANT, Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences (EAPS)-Finance Team, to provide comprehensive financial support for faculty members and their research groups. Will prepare, review, and submit proposals to government agencies, foundations, and other organizations, ensuring all comply with solicitation guidelines and MIT policies; interact with MIT Research Administrative Services; create award spreadsheets, forecast expenses, and develop and prepare financial analysis reports for principal investigators; advise faculty and researchers monthly on the financial status of award and fund accounts; set up pre-award spending, fabrication, and child accounts; set up, oversee, and manage complicated sub-awards; prepare and submit required government monthly reports, e.g., NASA 533M; monitor research account expenditures to ensure charges are in accordance with approved budgets and comply with sponsor and MIT guidelines; identify non-compliant items and take corrective actions when necessary; manage payroll distribution, track cost sharing and under-recovery, and complete award extensions and/or closeouts; review and authorize procurement transactions, including credit cards, requisitions, and travel; serve as a resource to faculty and research staff on the interpretation of Institute and non-Institute procedures/policies; proactively identify potential issues, troubleshoot, and problem solve; and assist with projects and other duties as requested.

Job Requirements

REQUIRED: high school diploma or its equivalent; at least five years’ accounting/finance experience; meticulous attention to detail; analytical, organizational, and written and oral communication skills; and proficiency with Excel, Word, MIT financial and administrative systems, and sponsored research submission systems (i.e., NSPIRES, Fastlane, Grants.gov). Must be able to set priorities, work under pressure of deadlines, problem-solve, follow through on assigned tasks, and work independently and as part of a team.
