Position Description

The Department of South Asian Studies and the Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations at Harvard University seek applications for a senior preceptor in Urdu and Indo-Persian. The appointment is expected to begin on July 1, 2025. The senior preceptor will be responsible for teaching Hindi, Urdu, and Indo-Persian at all levels, and across multiple genres and time periods. Administrative duties include curricular leadership in Hindi, Urdu, and Indo-Persian and training and supervision of teaching assistants, teaching fellows, and or preceptors. The position is for five years and renewable contingent upon performance, enrollments, and curricular need.

Basic Qualifications

The successful applicant will have extensive experience in teaching Hindi, Urdu, and Indo-Persian in a university context, and at all levels. The applicant should also have extensive experience in university advising. Native or near-native fluency and/or expertise in Hindi, Urdu, and Indo-Persian along with graduate-level training in Hindi, Urdu, and Indo Persian and related fields of study (such as South Asian area studies, literature, religion, or linguistics) is also required.

Additional Qualifications

Applicant should ideally have a record of conducting research in India and/or Pakistan, as well as knowledge of other South Asian languages.

A list of materials taught would also be helpful (grammars and dictionaries used, along with a representative list of texts taught at the intermediate and advanced levels). Please submit formal syllabi and teaching evaluations.

  5. Service statement describing efforts to strengthen academic communities, e.g., the candidate’s department, institution, and/or professional societies.

  6. Names and contact information of at least three referees, who will be asked by a system-generated email to upload a letter of recommendation once the candidate’s application has been submitted. Three letters of recommendation are required, and the application is considered complete only when at least three letters have been received.
