Biogen Sr. Associate NGS Scientist in Cambridge, Massachusetts

Biogen is seeking a Sr Associate Scientist to join the NGS & Genetic Technologies Lab in Cambridge, MA under the Genome Technology and Computational Sciences group, which provides cutting-edge genetics and genomics data, and informatics and analytics tools and services. The team has the technical depth, agility and motivation to solve scientifically demanding problems. The successful candidate will provide NGS and other genetic data to support research, early development, and manufacturing, will provide NGS expertise to cross-functional teams, and will work collaboratively on technology development.

  • Extensive experience in and a deep understanding of NGS library preparation from both DNA and RNA samples, and routine NGS library QC assessment

  • Operation of Illumina sequencing instruments (any model)

  • Proficiency on one of the common automation platforms (BioMek, Tecan, SciClone, etc)

  • Experience with 10X Genomics single-cell RNA-seq platform a plus.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Generate NGS sequencing libraries from RNA and DNA samples both manually and using automation. Quantify and QC libraries using LabChip, Bioanalyzer, and/or qPCR.

  • Generate high-quality data on Illumina instruments (NovaSeq, HiSeq, NextSeq, MiSeq)

  • Generate sequencing libraries and data for specialized protocols including long-read platforms, and single-cell RNA-seq.

  • Able to work independently, troubleshoot issues with library preparation and sequencer operation, and deliver data within required timelines.

  • Work collaboratively with the team to optimize RNA/DNA-seq processes.

  • Work with cross-functional teams to implement new protocols and technologies to support drug discovery and development.

  • Attend project meetings, provide advice on experimental design and ensure scientific collaborators are using the right technologies to answer biological questions.


Requires a BS in the Life Sciences, Molecular Biology, or directly related field plus 4-6 years of experience, or an MS and 2-4 years of experience.
