The Bloomberg Harvard City Leadership Initiative (https://www.cityleadership.harvard.edu/) —a program of the Bloomberg Center for Cities at Harvard University—is a collaboration between Harvard Kennedy School, Harvard Business School, and Bloomberg Philanthropies to equip mayors and senior city officials to tackle complex challenges in their cities and improve the quality of life of their residents.

The Initiative offers high-impact executive development programs for mayors and senior level city government officials to focus on their personal leadership and organizational practices within their cities. The Flagship Mayors Program (https://www.cityleadership.harvard.edu/program/city-leadership-initiative/) welcomes 40 mayors and senior leaders each year. The Program for New Mayors (https://www.cityleadership.harvard.edu/program/program-for-new-mayors/) engages mayors as they transition into office and over their first 100 days. A range of additional targeted programs include Managing Talent Acquisition in City Government, Leading City Procurement Reform, Negotiation for City Leaders, and Leading Civic Engagement.

As mayors and city leaders seek to further develop key capabilities, the Initiative also offers supplemental support through coaching, collaborations with technical support organizations, and additional coursework.

Since 2017, the Initiative has supported more than 300 Harvard students across a range of internships, fellowships, and research opportunities as we seek to develop future generations of city leaders and scholars. Through data analysis, insights, and recommendations, students have brought their talents to cities’ top priorities while gaining valuable experience in the field.

Underlying the work of the Bloomberg Harvard City Leadership Initiative is a foundation of research and curriculum development designed to address practical challenges faced by cities and to close the gaps in critical knowledge needed to support effective city leadership.
