HMS MEDscience’s mission is to address the inspiration gap in STEM education by providing students with opportunities to enhance the necessary 21st Century skills for success in their academic and future careers. Our vision is that all students, regardless of background, education, or zip code, should have equal opportunities in education and the sciences. Our program immerses students in realistic and dynamic simulated medical emergencies that promote teamwork and problem-solving skills. HMS MEDscience engages over 2,700 high school students (including over 900 Boston Public School students) through school-year and summer programs. 65% of the students who engage in school-year programming identify themselves as being part of a racial/ethnic group that is underrepresented in medicine.

HMS MEDscience has an opening for an experienced team teacher for its high school biology-based enrichment program serving a diverse population. In addition to teaching, this position will be responsible for coordinating the logistics of our programming for various partners and supporting the training of volunteers who join our teaching team. This team member will work effectively within a culture inclusive of individuals with diverse backgrounds, styles, abilities, and motivations, and appreciate and leverage the capabilities, insights, and ideas of all individuals.

Core Duties:

Lead Teacher

Delivers interactive lectures, simulation cases, and debriefs that utilize innovative and unique pedagogy techniques aligned with program goals of critical thinking, problem-solving, building teamwork, communication skills, developing personal health literacy, and continued interest in STEM fields Collaborates with the MEDscience team to deliver a semester-long curriculum to over 80 participating high schools, several week-long summer programs, and modules

Instruct students in medical skills, terminology, and scientific literacy (training provided).

Program Coordination

  • Coordinates the programming for at least 20 partnering high school classroom teachers for the fall and spring semester courses: discuss logistics, individualize program curriculum calendar, provide program materials, monitor completion of required paperwork & surveys.

  • Coordinates within the MEDscience teaching team: establish roles for each session, responsible for the set-up and breakdown of session materials.

  • Provide support and training as needed to partnering high school teachers, interns, and volunteers on the MEDscience curriculum and pedagogy.

  • Supervise student survey administration ensuring 100% rate of completion

Teacher Training

Trains newly hired teachers and volunteers on the curriculum, meeting ahead of class sessions to run training and observing classes to provide feedback.

Curriculum Development

Assist in refining written materials for pedagogy evaluation, and other documents needed for program expansion

Works with the Program Director and teaching team to develop and support curricular innovation and cultural competency in the classroom.
