Position Description

The Department of Art, Film, and Visual Studies ( AFVS ) seeks to appoint a tenure-track Assistant Professor in contemporary filmmaking practice. Applicants should have a terminal degree in a related field (PhD preferred) and experience teaching and advising students in programs at both undergraduate and graduate levels. The successful candidate will teach filmmaking to undergraduates and PhD students throughout the university who incorporate filmmaking into their academic research. Filmmakers whose work explores the boundaries of non-fiction and fiction, experiments with the limits of documentary, traverses lines of cultural difference, or otherwise makes original contributions to contemporary filmmaking are encouraged to apply. Applications from filmmakers from underrepresented groups are especially encouraged. The appointment is expected to begin on July 1, 2025.

Doctorate or MFA in related discipline required by the time the appointment begins

Candidates should have a record of accomplishment in the field, as demonstrated by screenings, exhibitions, and projects in venues relevant to the candidate’s practice.

  6. Names and contact information of 3-5 referees, who will be asked by a system-generated email to upload a letter of recommendation once the candidate’s application has been submitted. Three letters of recommendation are required, and the application is considered complete only when at least three letters have been received. At least one letter must come from someone who has not served as the candidate’s undergraduate, graduate, or postdoctoral advisor.
