A strategic thinker who will develop a multi-year strategy to ensure alignment of the workforce strategy with the academic, administrative, operational, EDI, and financial goals of the University. The VPHR will be a strong leader and collaborator with both breadth and depth of exposure across the entire HR function. Experience in a specialist role would be beneficial. Ideally, the individual will have previously served as a Head of HR. Other additional qualifications include the following:

  • is an effective leader with solid interpersonal and communication skills; strong business acumen; and a highly collegial orientation;

  • possesses excellent relationship building, communication, and influencing skills, with a proven ability to work effectively across a complex organization;

  • is both a collaborative team builder and an advocate of self, team, and others;

  • demonstrates a clear passion for working in a mission-driven institution and a desire to be part of a tight-knit community;

  • will drive for results while ensuring success is not found at the expense of the engagement of others; and

  • has demonstrated success in guiding strategic and operational change throughout an organization informed by data and industry best practices.

Job Function:Human Resources Job-Specific Responsibilities:It is of critical importance that the VPHR help align the workforce strategy to ensure Harvard is equipped to advance its teaching and research mission. The workforce strategy will require a focus on all aspects of recruitment, retention and development, including, but not limited to: equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI), competitive benefit design, cutting edge workplace policies, engaging talent development programs. The specific duties are wide-ranging, including, but not limited to:

  • Serve as a partner and advisor to the Executive Vice President and senior-leadership team to provide guidance on all human resources matters and develop a strategic human capital plan to create a strong employee experience where Harvard is consistently viewed as an employer of choice.

  • Build an HR strategy to ensure a diverse, inclusive, and high-performing workforce. Promote diversity and inclusion as a strategic imperative at all levels of the University.

  • Model strong, open, and proactive communication across the University and the school-based HR team.

  • Provide proactive consultation on organizational design/planning that enables the University to respond to everchanging environments and prepare the workforce of the future.

At that time, the employee will be required to move work location to the Cambridge campus as a condition of continued employment.Job Summary:Reporting to the Executive Vice President, the Vice President for Human Resources (VPHR) serves as a member of the University’s executive leadership team and will set the overall strategic vision for Harvard Human Resources (HHR). The VPHR has oversight of and responsibility for benefits and labor relations for the entire University; serves as the coordinating partner to the HR leaders at each of Harvard’s 12 individual schools; and is responsible for all aspects of HR for Central Administration.

The VPHR will build upon the strong foundation currently in place to establish a progressive, business-forward approach to recruiting and retaining a diverse population of talented individuals, providing development opportunities for all members of the workforce, and serve as a thought leader on how Harvard can thrive in the workplace of the future. This executive will create the capacity for HHR to continuously identify trends and innovation in all aspects of Human Resources and serve as a subject matter expert to the HR community.
