APTIM Scientist in Canton, Massachusetts

Job Overview:

APTIM currently has an opening for a geologist or Environmental Scientist in our Canton, MA location. This is an office and field-based position supporting our environmental assessment, monitoring, reporting and remediation programs.

Key Responsibilities/Accountabilities:

  • Calibrating and using technical instruments including some troubleshooting

  • Work will consist of straightforward tasks using established procedures, with the potential for solving routine problems as encountered including occasional equipment and data analysis.

  • Collecting environmental samples in the field

  • Occasional data entry using standard data management programs

  • Occasional oversight of subcontractor's operation of construction equipment, drilling equipment or other mechanical system installation

  • Basic surveying for elevations, angles and distances

  • Assist in report writing, data management and development of presentations

  • Use of complex instrumentation or equipment and will include installation, calibration and/or maintenance of equipment or instrumentation associated with monitoring or remediation systems on an as-needed basis.

  • The selected candidate will be expected to apply basic technical skills and knowledge to complete the assigned work and will be expected to manage his/her own time to meet deadlines set by others.

  • Develop and maintain records either manually or by computer methods

  • Performs field inspections

  • Report on conditions observed in the field, analyzed in conjunction with other project staff or determined from individual study

  • Evaluate routine operations of remediation system and assist with occasional operations and maintenance tasks and report on conditions evaluated and potential changes

  • Make recommendations for improvements to field system or work products

Basic Qualifications:

  • Travel is required.

  • Some overtime and weekend work will be required to meet project deadlines.

  • Capable of starting work as early as 5:30 am, and working on select weekends and some holidays.

  • Must possess and maintain valid driver's license.

  • Must be able to operate a vehicle, including a company pickup truck, and safely driving in a variety of settings including frequent trips in and around Boston

  • Lifting and physical work will be required.

  • Must be able to work independently on hazardous waste sites and meet the 40-hour OSHA physical requirements (includes wearing PPE and a full-face respirator). Training will be provided.

  • Must be able to work in the field in all types of field conditions/weather.

  • Must be able to lift 25 pounds, capable of climbing stairs, walking short distances, and in overall good physical condition as this position requires at least a modest level of physical activity.

  • Applying knowledge and skills to complete own work in a timely manner.

  • Vaccination against the COVID-19 virus is required for this position. APTIM will consider requests for exemption due to a qualifying medical condition or sincerely held religious belief or practice.
