Job Description

The Network Services department of Boston College Information Technology Services is responsible for all of the University’s network infrastructure (ex: switches/routers/ VPNs/wireless devices/firewalls/datacenters) and interconnections between the University’s campuses, Data Centers, disaster recovery sites, internet, Internet2 and cloud applications and services. This network is essential for all the academic, research and business functions of the University.

The Network Systems Engineer analyzes networking needs, recommends solutions, designs, implements, maintains and supports the University’s local area network (LAN) and the wide area network (WAN).

This position is primarily responsible for designing, implementing, maintaining, troubleshooting, and documenting the wireless networks within the University. The duties will include the installation and configuration of wireless networking equipment like wireless controllers, access points, and sensors, ensuring optimal network performance and security across the entire Boston College wireless network. This individual must be able to work independently, juggle multiple demands and prioritize work in a dynamic environment.

The staff works closely with the systems and ITS security teams. The Network Systems Engineer provides technical expertise in the engineering, installation, monitoring and maintenance of the network in support of the University’s business needs and academic mission.

●Off-hours are required for upgrades/maintenance work and may be required to meet project deadlines and for troubleshooting/problem resolution.

●This position requires the lifting and moving of equipment, working in confined spaces, and driving service vehicles.

WiFi Specific Qualifications:

●Extensive experience managing and monitoring Aruba Controllers, Access Points and sensors.

●Experience with the Airwave Management Platform (AMP) and Aruba ClearPass preferred.

●Aruba Central experience a plus.

●Understanding of 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac/ax and RF design and troubleshooting.CWNA/CWNE certifications and/or equivalent experience is required.CWNP certifications are a plus.

●Knowledge of security protocols WPA2/3, certs, 802.1x

●Ability to perform WiFi surveys using tools such as Hamina desired.

Technical Qualifications:

●Expertise with all IP network technologies including IPV4 / OSPF / BGP / protocol analysis / VPNs / Firewalls / SNMPv3, NetFlow & monitoring tools.

●Experience with DNS, DHCP, RADIUS preferred.

●Experience with Cisco (nexus/ASR/ASA/Firepower), FortiGate and Extreme Network equipment.

●Knowledge of IPV6, AWS/cloud networking, SIP/VoIP experience desirable.

●Familiarity with API programming / scripting is highly desirable.

Title and salary commensurate with relevant experience based on the following titles and hiring ranges:

Senior level (5 + years exp) salary range: 105k – 130k

Mid-level (3-5 years exp) salary range: 90k – 120k

Associate level (1-3 years exp) salary range: 73k - 92k

Requirements

●Bachelor’s degree in information technology or related field a plus.

●Minimum of 5 years’ relevant experience required.

●Verbal and written communication skills: must be able to articulate technical issues & solutions and produce clear, concise written documentation.

●CWNA / CWNE / CWNP certifications are a plus.

●Aruba ACMA / ACMP certifications are a plus.

●Cisco certifications are a plus.

●Experience working in a Higher Education and/or a large campus/corporate network is desirable.

Work Environment:

●This position is an on-premises job.Occasional ad hoc work from home may be available for certain situations with manager approval.
