Instructs pre and post-surgical patients in routine ambulation and transfers with/without an assistive device according to post-operative guidelines provided by the performing surgeon. Provides and instructs patients with post-operative precautions and pre-developed, post-operative rehabilitation programs based on established post-surgical protocols. Reports directly to Ambulatory Surgical Center Nursing staff.

Department Specific Responsibilities, as instructed by nursing and rehabilitation staff:

1. Appropriately fits crutches, walkers and canes for routine ambulation

2. Instructs patients in ambulation on level surfaces and stair climbing with appropriate assistive device

3. Instructs patient and/or family members in pre-developed, post-operative rehabilitation programs

4. Appropriately fits, instructs and educates patients and/or family members in the application and appropriate fit of all durable medical equipment (DME)

5. Records accurate and appropriate information for charging and inventory control of DME

6. Instructs and educates patient and/or family members in the application and appropriate use of cryotherapy devices

7. Performs routine ambulation and transfers with/without an assistive device in a safe manner with patients

8. Understands orthopedic precautions and weight bearing statuses; utilizes

appropriate precautions with patients for safe mobility appropriately documents all patient encounters

9. Demonstrates verbal communication to nursing and surgical staff regarding patient status and responses to interventions

10. Establishes effective working relationships with coworkers, departmental staff, orthopedic personnel including physicians, nurses and other pertinent personnel.

11. Demonstrates flexibility/adaptability in meeting environmental constraints and demands

12. Demonstrates proper body mechanics and lifting techniques with all duties/tasks

13. Utilizes unplanned, earned time in a productive and appropriate manner

14. Arrives and leaves at appropriate times based on surgery schedule.

15. Plans time away from work appropriately.

16. Performs other related duties as required
