The Nurse Manager has responsibility and accountability for the effective implementation of the philosophy, goals, policies, and procedures of the ASC. The Director of Nursing is responsible for the clinical and administrative management including planning, organizing, and directing the operation. This position will establish policies, procedures and departmental objectives. In this role you will report directly to the facility administrator.

Reporting directly to this position are: Registered Nurses, Surgical Technicians, Medical Assistants, Secretaries and non-clinical staff, i.e. SPD and housekeeping.

Job Description:

Department Specific Responsibilities:

  • Utilizes the nursing process for the delivery and management of patient care from admission to discharge (where applicable), appropriate to the development age of the patient population.

  • Collaborates with nurses and other members of the health care team related to patient plan of care.

  • Mentors the nursing staff in the nursing role

  • Interacts with staff nurses for the purpose of assessing the care provided and the nurses’ capabilities to provide care in changing circumstances.

  • Consults with patients and families in response to staff nurse requests, direct family requests and/or direct assessment of patient/family responses to hospitalization

  • Utilizes the quality assessment and improvement process to assess the response to nursing care from patients, families and others

  • Uses clinical skills to provide ongoing assessment and evaluation of nursing care

  • Collaborates with other members of the unit management team in developing practice guidelines, competencies and unit specific procedures.

  • Augments staffing pattern by providing direct care to ICU patients when necessary.

Management/Supervisor Responsibilities:

  • Assists the Director with management activities including hiring, evaluating, terminating and departmental staffing/scheduling.

  • Coordinates and directs patient care to ensure needs are met and hospital policy is followed.

  • Delegates appropriately to others in accordance with job description and competency level.

  • Maintains open communication with managers whose departments provide support services to the clinical area in order to ensure the appropriate level of service at all times.

  • Functions as liaison between administration, patients, physicians and other health care providers

  • Identifies resources necessary to meet needs of the unit and works with management team to develop budget to meet needs of the unit.

  • Collaborates with other members of the management team in development, monitoring and evaluation of QI projects on the unit using quality outcomes indicators.

  • Provides timely feedback and evaluations to staff through formal and informal forums.

  • Knowledgeable of current results of patient satisfaction surveys and assists in developing plan to improve results.

  • Assists director in the follow up with clinical practice issues with staff.

  • Ensures appropriate shift to shift staffing plan to accommodate changing needs of the unit.

  • Demonstrates the ability to be flexible, organized and function well under stressful situations.

  • Assumes 24 hour accountability for Unit

Staff Development:

  • Ensures that all members are competent to fulfill their assigned responsibilities.

  • Communicates and consistently supports by behavior the philosophy and goals of the unit, department and hospital.

  • Coordinates and supports the orientation and preceptor program on their unit.

  • Assists in the evaluation of the competency-based orientation program and makes recommendations when updating is necessary.

  • Role models appropriate and effective conflict resolution strategies for staff

  • Promotes staff participation in unit and hospital committees/task forces.
