State of Massachusetts Licensed Practical Nurse Seasonal 2nd shift in Fall River, Massachusetts
The Dr. John C. Corrigan Mental Health Center is seeking dedicated and compassionate individuals for the Seasonal Position of Licensed Practical Nurse II, who desire a rewarding career making a difference in the lives of individuals. Our ideal candidate for this position will work with and assist other professional staff in providing day-to-day direct care to individuals on a 16-bed secured inpatient unit with serious and persistent mental illness, including monitoring patients behavior, providing direct nursing care and patient teaching in regards to health and wellness, medication and illness management. The LPN, supervised by the Registered Nurse, provides direct nursing care to patients with severe and persistent mental Illness in accordance with the patient’s current treatment plan. The LPN interfaces with the pharmacy to obtain correct medications, administers medications and treatments, monitors patient’s responses to current medications and treatments and reports to the RN and or authorized prescriber as indicated. The selected candidate will possess strong therapeutic interpersonal skills to encourage and motivate individuals in their recovery to work towards treatment goals.
_Please Note: There are 2 positions available. “This is a seasonal position for an anticipated duration of 90 days” is 40 hours per week._
The selected candidate will work 2:45pm - 11:15pm shift.

_Duties and Responsibilities (these duties and responsibilities are not all inclusive):_
Provides direct nursing care to patients with severe and persistent symptoms of acute mental illness to ensure patients’ health and safety needs are met utilizing the nursing process and following current standards of care.
Administers medications and treatment orders as prescribed by an appropriate medical practitioner and document each patient’s medication regime in both electronic and paper mediums, engaging proactively to prevent the possibility of medication errors.
Observes, reports and records patient’s conditions, behaviors and progress and provides feedback to appropriate personnel, to include the Registered Nurse and the authorized prescriber, on an ongoing basis and during shift changes to ensure the continuity of patient care and the well-being of patients.
Participates in admission, discharge and transfer of patients as they occur to facilitate a smooth transition coordination and continuity of patient care.
Works with direct care staff to meet needs of patients in bathing, dressing, feeding and all other rehabilitative activities to assist patients in reaching optimum level of functioning.
Monitors, reports and documents patient’s behaviors and responses to current medication and treatment regiments.
Educates and instructs clients/consumers in medication and health issues by facilitating 1:1 and group education and documenting accordingly in the patient’s medical record.
Participates in medical and psychiatric emergency responses, including the provision of first aid and CPR in accordance with current trainings and assists and participates in de-escalation and all approved forms of restraint per DMH regulations and facility protocols when needed.
Demonstrates skills and knowledge necessary to provide appropriate care to age related, spiritual and cultural needs of patients served.
Working knowledge of the theories, methods, procedures and practice of nursing care of patients as a Licensed Practical Nurse.
Working knowledge of the established nursing procedures for the administration of medication and the performance of treatments.
Knowledge of the English language and ability to follow and provide both written and oral instructions and reports.
Ability to work effectively with physically, mentally or emotionally disturbed clients and ability to interact with people who are under physical and or emotional stress.
Capacity to gather information through observing and questioning individuals and examining records and documents.
Capability to maintain a calm manner in stressful or emergency situations and exercise sound judgment.
Skilled in writing clearly, communicating effectively and developing ideas in logical sequence.
Demonstrated experience in the ability to understand, apply and explain the laws, rules, regulations, guidelines and policies governing nursing practice.
Capability to lift and carry heavy objects or persons and participate in CPR and restraint.
Demonstrated competence in establishing rapport and dealing tactfully with persons from varied ethnic, cultural or economic backgrounds or with those who are under physical and /or emotional stress.
Bilingual (Portuguese, Spanish, Khmer) or multilingual.
Experience working with individuals with serious mental illness, behavioral or mood disturbances in an inpatient setting.
Trained in de-escalation and nonviolent crisis intervention procedures.
Experience working in facilities that are accredited and inspected by The Joint Commission, Department of Public Health, Board of Health, Department of Mental Health, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.
Current & valid driver's license from Massachusetts or other state.
While performing the duties of this position, incumbents work under stressful situations and under time pressures.
Applicants may be exposed to verbal and/or physical confrontations and potentially dangerous environments.
Incumbents will work nights, weekend days and holidays, and may work extended hours.

MINIMUM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS
Applicants must have at least one year of paraprofessional experience in the field of nursing as a licensed practical nurse.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Possession of a current and valid license as a practical nurse under the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing.
