Town of Falmouth Public Library has immediate openings for part-time Library Aides. Positions are 10 hours a week. Afternoon shifts to be scheduled over 3 days, including Friday or Saturday. Duties include monitoring room occupancy, regular sanitizing of high-touch surface, shelving & retrieving materials, shelf organization, emptying book drop & delivery boxes, clerical duties & all other duties as assigned. Positions involve continuous movement by walking, bending, lifting & reaching. Lifting up to 30 pounds. Must be able to sit, stand, bend, reach, stoop, walk, kneel & read visually. The successful candidates will be courteous, highly detail-oriented, with previous customer service & computer experience. A strong interest in reading is preferred. Wage is $15.63/hr. Job Responsibilities The essential duties or functions listed below are examples of the type of work performed. Works under the direct supervision of the Subscription Librarian, department or branch supervisor as assigned; cooperates as a team member with other library staff. Sorts & shelves library materials in a prescribed order & with a high degree of accuracy; retrieves & re-files materials from storage archives. Packs, unpacks & sorts library materials for the delivery system. Assists the circulation staff, by emptying the book drop throughout the day & bringing materials to the checkout desk. Assists patrons by giving directions, locating materials & helping with reference equipment; refers patrons requiring professional assistance to the reference desk. Resolves complaints, referring difficult patron questions & concerns to a supervisor; maintains positive public relations while enforcing library policies & regulations. Shelf reads the collection alphabetically & numerically in assigned areas; straightens books on shelves & shifts materials as needed. Re-shelves materials used by patrons; returns materials in proper order to library shelves. Performs clerical tasks that may require using computers & other office equipment; may perform some circulation support duties. Works on special projects & other duties as assigned. May be required to perform duties at various library locations when necessary. Recommended Minimum Qualifications Education & Experience - High school student in good standing or high school diploma; library experience Preferred. Knowledge - Knowledge of the Dewey decimal classification System & Windows Operating System. Skills - Strong reading & organizational skills & possesses good customer service skills & an appreciation for library services; uses tact & judgment. Abilities - Ability to follow written & oral instructions, to learn basic library methods & procedures, to pay attention to detail & complete duties in a timely & accurate manner; able to relate well to patrons & staff in a tactful, courteous & helpful manner & uses good judgment. Physical Requirements Has frequent contact with the public; performs work in a public environment with numerous interruptions & with the understanding that such an environment requires judgment, tact, courtesy & patience. Operates standard library equipment; has frequent contact with the public & with other library departments. Work includes weekdays, evenings, Saturdays & may include an occasional Sunday when necessary. Errors could result in reduced levels of service & adverse public relations. Moderate physical effort required in performing duties under typical library conditions. Must lift library materials weighing up to 30 lbs.; push/pull carts weighing up to 60 lbs. Must be able to sit, st&, bend, reach, stoop, walk, kneel, & read visually. Preference Date: January 25, 2021
