Description
Essential Duties and Major Responsibilities:
Assists in the training of new Medical Assistants
Assists in the coordination of daily job activities and day to day supervision of the Medical Assistants
Serves as the supervisor and mentor for Medical Assistant students assigned to the department
Identifies potential system improvements
Works cooperatively with the Manager to design, test, and implement performance improvement projects
Works cooperatively with the Manager to consistently provide a high level of customer service from the MA staff
Screens incoming patient related correspondence (i.e. telephone messages, lab reports, consultant reports) and prioritizes routing to nursing and/or providers for appropriate action to be taken
Maintains computerized logging system of patient related correspondence (i.e. telephone messages, lab reports, consultant reports) and provides follow-up for items not receiving action in a timely manner
Works collaboratively with nurses and providers to assist in providing information to patients and/or consultant providers (i.e. correspondence to patients, office notes to consultant providers)
Works collaboratively with nurses and providers to obtain and communicate completion with patients seeking medical refills
Works collaboratively with telephone reception staff to improve quality of messages and clarify patient concerns and questions
Provide coverage to assist in answering incoming phone calls if telephone reception staff need assistance
Prepares patients for visits with providers by performing and recording vital signs (including: blood pressure, temperature, pulse, respirations, weight, and other procedures as needed)
Assists in routine physical examinations by preparing the patient, the equipment, and supplies, and assisting the provider as needed
Assists in preparing patients for routine diagnostic procedures (i.e. urine specimens) and performing selected screening tests (including: urine dipsticks, urine hCG, and rapid strep throat cultures)
Assists in preparing routine diagnostic request forms
Books patients for tests and appointments with outside facilities and/or specialists
Work is of medium demand, walking and standing.
Occasional lifting of patients with assistance, reaching, handling and fingering of instruments and equipment and caring of patient needs.
Able to lift 40 lbs.
Hearing to distinguish difference in heartbeat and breathing of patients and to hear instructions.
Near visual acuity to read gauges and dials on equipment.
Color vision for perceiving changes in patient's skin color or color of solutions.
Managing patient care is a team effort that involves clinical and non-clinical staff interacting with patients.
Demonstrate understanding and commitment of the health center mission

Performs other job related duties as required or assigned
Minimum Qualifications:
High School Diploma or GED required, Associate Degree in Medical Office Assistant or equivalent preferred
Five years experience as Medical Assistant, preferably in a Community Health Center environment
Bilingual in Spanish and/or Hmong preferred
Computer skills for accurate data entry
Knowledge of basic medical terminology
AHA BLS Health Care Provider certification or equivalent
Demonstrated interpersonal relationship skills
Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills in English
Demonstrated ability to work in a fast paced medical office environment
