GREENFIELD 7th & 8th Grade English Language Arts Teacher JOB DESCRIPTION: Four Rivers Charter Public School is seeking outstanding candidates to teach 7th and 8th grade ELA. Affiliated with EL Education, Four Rivers is college preparatory and has a clear mission of educating young people for lives of learning and service. Located in Greenfield, MA, Four Rivers enrolls 220 students in grades 7-12 and is in its twentieth year of operation. In our dynamic, collaborative school, teachers work closely with their colleagues, developing curriculum and helping shape the culture of the school in accordance with the school\'s mission and EL Education practices of challenging, project-based learning. SPECIFIC QUALIFICATIONS Successful experience teaching English Language Arts to high middle students, with a minimum of three years in a charter or district public school preferred. Strong background in guiding students to analyze literary and non-narrative texts, assess an author\'s purpose, write in a variety of genres, and grapple with meaningful questions in student-led discourse as demonstrated through academic preparation, professional experience, and personal interests; strong skills with computer technology. Experience integrating English with other subjects is a significant plus. Massachusetts certification or \"highly qualified\" status in high school English preferred; or readiness to become \"highly qualified\" by having an undergraduate degree or coursework in the subject and by passing the Massachusetts teacher tests in the first year. Personal qualities that exemplify the school\'s emphasis on character and community, including genuine interest in and connection with adolescents, eagerness to serve as an advisor, strong interpersonal skills, commitment to teamwork, and readiness to reflect and grow. Experience, training and interest in teaching a range of abilities within heterogeneously grouped classes, including students who are advanced and those with learning differences and special needs. Enthusiasm for the school\'s mission and its themes of nature, technology and community; understanding of the school\'s responsibilities as a charter public school; and the energy, flexibility, and sense of adventure required to work hard as a member of the core faculty in a young school. Experience implementing culturally sustaining teaching practices. EXPECTATIONS Demonstrate commitment to student writing and research. Invest in our commitment to multicultural education by teaching texts and introducing units that examine race, gender, class, sexual orientation, and religion. Use a range of instructional strategies to implement a student-centered approach. Differentiate instruction to meet the needs of students with varying learning styles and levels of ability. Committed to ongoing growth and development as a teacher and collaboration with colleagues. Help cultivate a culture of student reading outside the classroom. Appreciation for the expeditionary learning (EL) design model -- commitment to develop curriculum and implement EL Education Core Practices, including in-depth learning expeditions. Energy, flexibility, and sense of adventure required to work hard in a young-ish school. At least 3 year(s) of relevant experience preferred. Master degree preferred.
