Position Purpose:

Under supervision, installs, maintains and repairs mains, valves, pumps, hydrants, and other water service equipment. Operates construction equipment, landscaping and lawn mowing tractors pumps, compressors and pneumatic tools; Does related work as required.

Primary Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Knowledge of construction, operations and maintenance of water distribution systems. Understanding of hydraulic principles related to piping networks. Strong interpersonal skills required.

  • Strong computer skills as they relate to the operation of leak detection equipment (loggers, correlators, etc.)

  • Operates equipment, drives utility vehicles, Installs, maintains, and repairs water mains, pipes, valves, pumps, hydrants, and other equipment.

  • Disassembles fire hydrants, removes defective parts installs new parts and reassembles hydrants.

  • Excavates and backfills trenches and culverts, installs, repairs, and replaces water mains, repairs valves and hydrants, drills and installs taps in mains, and performs related street repairs.

  • Some knowledge of proper procedures used in making a complex repair to water mains, pipes, and appurtenances of varied types of tools used in the maintenance and repair of water installations and of the proper use of these tools.

  • Conduct ground keeping and landscaping functions including brush cutting, grubbing and trash / debris removal from work areas. Operation of snowplowing equipment. Chain saw operation, fence repairs, and when directed collect and deliver system samples as needed.

  • Must participate in emergency stand-by rotation and must respond to the yard within forty-five minutes of notification.

  • Drive company equipment that may require a CDL and a hoisting license.

  • Performs similar or less skilled work as assigned.

  • Assists employees of a higher classification as assigned.

Work Environment:

  • This position is based in the water treatment system and work is performed both inside and outside with exposure to all kinds of weather conditions.

  • The employee may be exposed to some noise, dust, fumes, gases, greases, oils, solvents, and vibrations.

  • The employee may work on slippery/uneven surfaces, around machinery with moving parts, moving objects/vehicles, and ladder/scaffolding, below ground and may be exposed to water and other liquid materials.

Qualifications

Education/Experience/Background:

  • High School Diploma/GED is required.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Able to manipulate commercial grade lawn mowers and various landscaping tools.

  • Ability to read, writes, speak and understand English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position.

  • Ability to operate a 90lb jackhammer.

  • Ability to understand, remember and carry out oral and written directions to learn quickly from oral and written explanations and from demonstrations.

  • Must have knowledge of the proper methods of repairing, lubricating and maintaining mechanical equipment.

  • Knowledge of the principles, practices, equipment and methods used in water treatment, pumping, distribution, and storage tank operations preferred.

  • Must be able to respond to emergency calls as needed and work extended hours to accommodate Company needs.

Required Certification/Licenses/Training:

  • Valid MA Driver's license is required.

  • Commercial Driver's License may be required to operate company equipment.

  • Valid Massachusetts Drinking Water Grade 2 Distribution License or the ability to obtain within 1 year.

Physical Requirements:

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk or sit; reach with hands and arms, climb or balance; kneel, crouch or crawl.

  • The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision and distance vision as well as the ability to distinguish color and shades.
