State of Massachusetts Nutrition Assistant (Dietary Department) in Holyoke, Massachusetts
The Soldiers’ Home in Holyoke is seeking a Nutrition Assistant to join our team working with our Veterans.The selected candidate will assist with cook and kitchen supervision in the preparation and cooking of food under the direction of the Food Service Supervisors, and will provide coverage as needed in the absence of staff.
*Schedule: *This is a full-time (40 hours/week) position working from 10:00 am – 6:30 pm and includes an every other weekend rotation. Please note: This is 24 hour/7 days a week long-term care facility and as a result, the Soldiers' Home in Holyoke may require this individual to be present during nontraditional hours when circumstances dictate the operational need
/_Duties and Responsibilities (these duties are a general summary and not all inclusive):_/
Advises staff about food consistencies, substitutions, preparation, and leftovers; enforces proper sanitation standards are met (i.e. storage and handling of food, proper labeling) with following ServSafe regulations.
Assists on tray line ensuring veterans receives correct food that coincides with diet orders; utilizes nutritional software program and enters/verifies all data.
Develops menus in collaboration with Supervisors to ensure compliance with the Massachusetts State Agency Food Standards and all Dietary Guidelines.
Participates in planning and revision of dietary policies and procedures.
Updates and maintains current data on the following information: daily food temperatures, food allergies, and test trays.
Maintains and updates all job flow sheets for reporting staff in collaboration with Supervisors.
Maintains and updates daily opening and closing checklists along with extra cleaning assignments.
Conducts orientation and training of new employees within department.
Evaluates the need for new equipment by checking condition, age, etc., of present equipment in order to make recommendations to supervisors.
In absence of supervisor, conducts inventory using excel spreadsheets and is responsible for organizing deliveries.
Extensive knowledge of kitchen production, materials, procedures, and methods used in the ordering, planning, preparation and serving of quantity foods.
Demonstrated experience and knowledge of nutritive food values and therapeutic diets.
Considerable ability in planning, preparing, and serving quantity foods.
Familiarity with medical terminology applicable to nutritional care.
Knowledge of community nutrition and applications in the veteran health and clinical care practices for clients.
Developed sensitivity to the needs of the client population served.
Competent with Microsoft Office products including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.

Minimum Entrance Requirements:
Applicants must have at least (A) two years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, professional or paraprofessional experience in the field of dietetics or nutrition, or (B) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below.
I. An Associate's degree with a major in home economics, dietetics, foods and nutrition, nutrition or food science and technology may be substituted for a maximum of one year of the required experience.*
II. A Bachelor's or higher degree with a major in home economics, dietetics, foods and nutrition, nutrition or food science and technology may be substituted for the required experience.*
III. Training in a dietetic internship or program approved by the American Dietetic Association (ADA) may be substituted for the required experience on the basis of one month of such training for one month of experience.
IV. Registration as a Registered Dietitian by the American Dietetic Association (ADA) may be substituted for the required experience.
*Education toward such a degree will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed.
