Summary This position is in the Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Service working for VA Boston HCS in Jamaica Plain, MA. Responsibilities THIS IS NOT A VIRTUAL POSITION, YOU MUST LIVE WITHIN OR BE WILLING TO RELOCATE WITHIN A COMMUTABLE DISTANCE OF THE DUTY LOCATION Duties include, but may not be limited to the following: Performs all aspects of specimen processing and procurement. Handles relevant phone calls, utilizes centrifuges, automated processors, refrigerators and freezers, documents temperatures and records maintenance in a timely manner consistent with SOP's. Maintains supplies and organizes a timely flow of specimens for testing. Performs work in the clinical laboratory involving pre-analytical, analytical and post-analytical stages using perfected laboratory techniques in chemistry, immunology, hematology, coagulation, urinalysis and microbiology. Selects, performs, evaluates and monitors the performance of high complexity, moderate complexity and waived testing procedures using manual and/or instrument techniques in accordance with established protocols. Evaluates the validity of data in relation to the test system and accepted assay procedures to assure the patient results are accurate. Performs maintenance, daily startup and shut down of the instruments inclusive but not limited to reagent, control, and calibrator selection and preparation. Maintains all testing platforms. Maintains equipment, supplies and facilities. Assists in record keeping practices in accordance with current record keeping guidelines, and patient information security. Performs other related duties as assigned. The SPF for this position is: Experience performing phlebotomy on human patients. -AND- IN ADDITION TO THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY AND SELECTIVE PLACEMENT FACTOR, TO QUALIFY FOR THIS POSITION AT THE GS-6 GRADE LEVEL, YOU MUST MEET ONE OF THE FOLLOWING: SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Requires one full year of specialized experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level. Specialized experience includes: (a) Technical medical laboratory support work such as performing laboratory tests and examinations (chemical, microbiologic, hematologic and blood banking) and preparing reports of findings or (b) technical support work in a closely related field, e.g., biological laboratory technician work, that required application of the methods and techniques for the position to be filled. -OR- EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least six months a graduate-level education, or an internship may be used to substitute for the required experience. Only education and/or internship directly related to this position is creditable. (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED) -OR- COMBINATION: Equivalent combinations of graduate-level education and related specialized experience may be used to meet total experience requirement. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements: The work requires regular and recurrent sitting, standing, walking, reaching, lifting (no more than 25lbs and bending to perform tests, obtain blood samples, obtain supplies and operate analyzers, requires regular computer data input, and microscopic evaluations.
