Job Description:

The Peer Specialist works as part of CCS staff to provide a safe and welcoming environment for the client within the CCS program. Uses skills and insight to assist clients in skills building and utilization of community resources. Runs skill-building groups to help facilitate additional skill building for client on the unit.

Essential Functions/Key Responsibilities:

  1. Provides a safe welcoming environment for the client while in the CCS program

  2. Runs skills building groups for clients on the milieu, as assigned.

  3. Works collaboratively with CCS colleagues to assist clients stay on the unit and aftercare planning.

  4. Complete required safety checks as needed.

  5. Ensures that the client understands the CCS program and processes assists skills building with the client to gain needed skills while on the unit such as managing stress in the community, communicating with other and appropriate advocating.

  6. As appropriate, meets one to one with clients to share skills learned that have been useful in managing stress in the community, in identifying strengths, existing supports and community resources and assisting in connecting to additional needed resources.

  7. Completes appropriate documentation, within the policy guidelines, for all activities completed.

QUALIFICATIONS & EDUCATION:

  • Bachelor degree preferred, other education/training/experience considered.

  • Have personal knowledge of mental illness via their own lived experience with recovery.

  • Currently have Certification as a Peer Specialist or willing to obtain within 6 months of employment.

  • Demonstrates good boundaries regarding confidentiality and personal relationships, while at the same time be able to share personal knowledge about recovering from mental illness.

  • Demonstrates strong knowledge and skills regarding the recovery process.

  • Demonstrates the ability to evaluate what is needed by each individual and adjust approach accordingly.
