Our work impacts every aspect of people's lives and is critical to the health and wellbeing of our residents and visitors. MassDEP is the lead agency for safe management of toxics and hazardous materials, promotion of waste reduction and recycling, preservation of the state's wetlands and coastal resources, air quality monitoring and pollution reduction, and so much more. MassDEP seeks applicants for a Site Operator (Environmental Analyst II) position within the Bureau of Air and Waste, Division of Air and Climate Programs. This position is full-time and is assigned to the Air Assessment Branch (AAB) located at MassDEP’s Wall Experiment Station, 37 Shattuck Street, Lawrence MA. The workplace is a hybrid work model that combines working in the field, office, and remotely. Under the supervision of the Field Operations Branch Manager, or his/her designee, the Environmental Analyst II will provide support to the statewide ambient air monitoring program to ensure operations are executed in accordance with applicable regulations, guidance and policies. Specific duties for this position include, but are not limited to, the following: * Operate field instrumentation and perform routine quality assurance (QA) activities such as calibrations on multiple types of electronic and mechanical air monitoring instruments. Document all activities in logbook entries. * * Set up and collect PM2.5filters and other non-continuous samples and return them to the laboratory for analysis in accordance with QA guidance.* * Complete daily Level I quality control (QC) review of raw air monitoring results to verify the prior 24-hours of data by identifying errors, interferences, or contamination and documenting events that impact data quality clearly when they first occur. * * Assist in the preparation of scientific data and reports for regulatory use by reviewing data for accuracy, completeness and compliance with state and federal laws, rules, policies and guidelines.* * Perform calculations related to gas flow rates, gas volume and pollutant concentrations.* * Maintain, troubleshoot, and repair electronic and mechanical air monitoring equipment at field-based air monitoring stations in accordance with manufacturer guidance and standard operating procedures (SOP). * * Maintain air monitoring infrastructure such as shelters and meteorological towers, including shelter modifications, minor roof leak repair, implementing health and safety improvements, and landscaping.* * Collect and install biological air monitoring samples at several fixed locations in and around the Boston area for delivery to the Department of Public Health laboratory in Jamaica Plain. * Write letters, reports and memoranda on the results of monitoring activities.* * Participate in meetings with private, state, federal and municipal agencies on environmental measurement issues and provide technical and analytical expertise.* * Recommend operational strategies for dealing with monitoring network compliance in the areas of ambient air quality measurements.* * Assist in the development and maintenance of various computer programs, such as data acquisition software and MS Office, for data reporting and reduction.* * Assist in the installation of health and safety (H&S) improvements at existing air monitoring stations.* * Perform other duties as assigned.* *Preferred Qualifications: * Ability to understand and apply laws, rules and regulations concerning the environment, in particular those dealing with ambient air quality and ambient air monitoring. * Knowledge of scientific principles and proficiency in mathematics (algebra and statistics). * Ability to use hand tools, climb ladders, work on roof tops, move equipment and compressed gas cylinders and other equipment up to 50 lbs. in weight. * Ability to write clear, concise reports, letters etc. and maintain accurate records. * Proven ability to meet deadlines and prioritize multiple responsibilities. * Initiative and ability to work independently while also interacting effectively in a team environment. * Basic computer skills, including a working knowledge and experience with Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Word, and Microsoft Excel. * Possession of a valid driver’s license. MINIMUM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS: Applicants must have at least (A) three years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, technical or professional experience in the field of environmental science, biology, chemistry, earth science, environmental health, meteorology, natural science, toxicology or public health, of which (B) at least one year must have been in a professional capacity, or (C) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the following substitutions. Substitutions: * I. An Associate's degree with a major in the field of environmental science, biology, chemistry, earth science, environmental health, meteorology, natural science, toxicology or public health may be substituted for a maximum of one year of the required (A) experience. II. A Bachelor's degree with a major in the field of environmental science, biology, chemistry, earth science, environmental health, meteorology, natural science, toxicology or public health may be substituted for a maximum of two years of the required (A) experience.* III.
