MIT Lincoln Laboratory Assoc Staff - Engineering in Lexington, Massachusetts

The Interceptor and Sensor Technology Group supports the development of advanced sensor and interceptor technologies for use in future surveillance, missile defense and air defense systems.

The Group is currently supporting programs in the development of air and space-based visible and infrared sensors and state of the art hypersonic vehicle modeling frameworks. Our teams work in a fast paced diverse innovation collaborative model that includes ideation and mentoring. The group is also developing and evaluating seeker and missile system technology to counter hypersonic, cruise, low-cost drone, and ballistic missile threats. Our programs cover a range of activities including prototyping of advanced electro-optical sensors and algorithms, laboratory testing and phenomenology, mission simulations and modeling, field and flight tests, and data analysis and exploitation.

Job Description: Associate Staff GR-38

The Interceptor and Sensor Technology Group is looking for a candidate to join our team in the development of software and software architectures for real-time operation of advanced electro-optical and infrared (EO/IR) sensor systems. Software and algorithm projects include: signal and image processing, tracking, resource management, hardware/software integration, user interfaces, and autonomous hardware control. Typical hardware subsystems that leverage the advanced algorithms include: infrared and visible cameras, inertial measurement systems, gimbals assemblies and systems, optomechanical control devices, and robotic platforms. The role may also include development of fully autonomous operations of distributed sensor and vehicular systems with interoperability between sensors, guidance, and control subsystems.

Candidates with experience in ANY or ALL of the following should consider applying: multiple programming languages, especially object-oriented C++, developing software in Linux environments, design and developing distributed modular open architectures. Experience with publish/subscribe and data driven architectures is a plus, as is experience with massively-parallelized software implementations using graphics processing units (GPUs) or other specialized processors.

The candidate will collaborate in a diverse team environment. This includes working, interacting, and communicating with a variety of audiences including both technical and non-technical peers and sponsors. Experience with modeling or development of aerospace systems, guidance systems, or optical sensor phenomenology is desired.

Our group works in a diverse collaborative and dynamic team environment that includes collaboration with multi-disciplinary teams across Lincoln Laboratory, the U.S. Government, and industry. Work categories include:

  • Rapid prototyping of novel sensor hardware, sensing concepts, control and guidance applications, and system-level concepts

  • Laboratory and field testing of integrated hardware and software sensor and control systems to evaluate performance and demonstrate capability

  • Modeling and simulation of sensor and control systems to guide design, predict capability, and evaluate prototypes

  • Analysis of data from prototype testing and simulations to characterize performance, identify opportunities for enhancement, and develop new concepts

Experience/ Education

Education: Master's Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering.

Experience: Demonstrated an ability to use industry-standard tools for software design, development, testing, debugging, version control, and project management. The candidate should also possess strong analytic skills and have experience utilizing prototyping and analysis tools and languages, such as MATLAB, Simulink, and/or Python, to create models, visualize and analyze data, and assess performance of systems. Prior experience with EO/IR or RF sensing, aerospace applications, guidance and navigation systems, and/or robotic control systems is desired.

Prior experience and demonstrated examples of the candidate’s ability to work on technical problems, both individually and as a member of a team, are desirable. Additionally examples of being able to independently setting personal goals to coordinate and meet the priorities of different projects in a timely manner are also desired. A successful candidate will possess a significant amount of initiative in performing independent research and project execution by setting and meeting critical milestones as well as participating in a fast-paced collaborative environment. In addition, candidates should possess strong communication and presentation skills and demonstrated experience communicating complex technical information to both technical and non-technical audiences.
