MIT Lincoln Laboratory Associate Staff - Optical Imaging Systems in Lexington, Massachusetts

The Advanced Concepts & Technologies Group (https://www.ll.mit.edu/r-d/air-missile-and-maritime-defense-technology/advanced-concepts-and-technologies) is looking for candidates who are excited to work on challenging problems in national security and join our diverse team. The group develops technology to protect our deployed sailors, soldiers, and assets against advanced threats, while enabling operations in complex maritime environments. The group’s research and development activities include concepts design, advanced algorithms development, software and hardware prototyping, experimental field-testing, and data analysis. Our team focuses on creating new capabilities through rapid prototyping of software and hardware. Of particular interest to the group is the development of advanced electronic warfare systems prototypes, advanced sensors prototypes, novel signal processing algorithms, optimization for resource allocation, and artificial intelligence to enable the development of next generation systems for fleet and surface assets defense.

Job Description

The Advanced Concepts and Technologies Group is seeking a candidate to conduct research in maritime electro-optical / infrared (EO/IR) imaging and help develop capability for next-generation systems for the DoD. The work will include the design and fabrication of custom imaging systems and experimental lab and field testing of custom EO/IR imaging systems as part of a dedicated team. Research areas and roles may also include data analysis, algorithm development and signal/image processing to detect targets of interest.

The candidate will be responsible for working with a team in designing, fabricating and testing custom camera imaging systems by supporting both hardware design, fabrication and testing. A practical understanding of electronics, mechanical, and thermal design and fabrication is helpful. Experience in building prototype optical systems including system design, component specification, and fabrication is desirable.

Experience in software development to support the current data acquisition environment in C++ that includes camera interfaces, data display, processing and acquisition is desirable including implementation of revision control practices. Familiarity with commercial camera operation and standards as well as general test equipment are beneficial. Experience in writing command scripts to operate test equipment is beneficial.

The candidate should have experience in conducting optical measurements and conducting image data analysis using software tools such as Matlab, Python or C++. Experience with image processing techniques including spatial and temporal filtering as well as AI/ML techniques is very beneficial.

The candidate should also be able to participate in local and remote field testing with the team. Good communication and troubleshooting skills are critical and the ability to produce and present effective presentations on project results in a clear manner are important. In addition, an ability to think creatively and generate new innovative ideas in aspects of maritime imaging systems is very beneficial.

Education:

Masters in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, Physics or related field. In lieu of a Masters, a Bachelors degree with 5+ years of directly relevant experience.
