About the role:

Join Takeda as a Director, Medical External Affairs where you will develop and drive execution of macro level medical and scientific engagement strategies with multi-sector organizational partners to advance shared goals. Priorities will have strong relevance to corporate goals and Takeda therapeutic areas of focus. As part of the US Medical team, you will partner with US Value and Evidence Generation, Therapeutic Area (TA) Medical Units, Medical Communications, Public Affairs, Health Equity & Patient Affairs and other internal stakeholders to create a virtuous cycle of patient-centered engagement, research, education and partnerships to transform care in the US. As part of the US Medical Team, you will report to the Head, US Medical External Affairs. This is a hybrid role based in Lexington, MA.

How you will contribute:

  • Strategic Plans : Initiate and lead strategic development of macro-level medical engagement strategy and implementation plans, co-created and endorsed by senior leadership team.

  • Relationship / Program Management: Identify, create and sustain medical relationships with prioritized external organizations ( societies, trade organizations, quality, public health etc.,). Use knowledge and insights of healthcare trends to help shape the external medical environment through strategic external engagement with prioritized stakeholders. Influence and sometimes leads US medical corporate level innovative partnerships that improve quality of care and equity in populations of interest.

  • Evaluation & Insight Sharing: Define and measure US scientific and medical organizational engagement and its impact. Partner with medical scientific communications, corporate communications, public affairs and other internal stakeholders to communicate and share partnership updates and insights across Takeda and externally.

ACCOUNTABILITIES

Medical External Organization Engagement

  • Partner with US Medical External Affairs TA leads, Value & Evidence Generation, TA medical unit and other USM Functions, Health Equity & Patient Affairs, Public Affairs, R& D, to understand unmet scientific, clinical and health policy innovation needs.

  • Anticipate trends in the external environment that may impact Takeda and deliver engagement plans with prioritized external organizations that strengthen medical relationships with key healthcare quality, research trade, population health, professional societies, patient organizations and other decision makers.

  • Support and collaborate with Medical Units to evolve and align therapeutic/ disease area external engagement plans to achieve their strategic goals. Raise cross TA and enterprise opportunities and influence decisions to advance where relevant.

  • Cultivate key external organization relationships, identify and influence partnership opportunities and lead above disease and/or cross-TA medical and scientific project related engagements.

  • Corporate Memberships- Develop and gain alignment of yearly above disease/therapeutic area strategic plan, and work with operational team who facilitates review committee meetings, tracks and ensures corporate membership benefits are met. Partner with Takeda medical point of contact to communicate and share relevant insights from corporate memberships and project related partnerships. Ensure adherence to all compliance policies, identify and mitigate risk with ethics and compliance and legal.

  • . Provide insights and thought partnership to support senior leadership engagement with key external boards ( i.e., National Pharmaceutical Council and similar organizations). May represent Takeda on corporate member boards or workstreams and ensures cross-functional collaboration with internal stakeholders including US Public Affairs and Corporate Communications to align on Takeda positioning

. Fosters Transparent Communication / Builds Relationships Among Key Stakeholders

  • Understand the US Medical and US BU stakeholder map and create meaningful and constructive relationships to further team awareness and effective internal partnerships.

  • Identify areas of opportunity and collaboration across functional areas within the organization ( i.e., Leadership team, Medical Unit TA teams, Value & Evidence Generation, Medical Communications, Public Affairs, Global Medical, Corporate Communications, etc., ) and influences implementation of such ideas.

  • Serve as a primary medical point of contact to US Public Affairs in support of Takeda health policy goals. Partner with US Medical External Affairs TA and Public Affairs TA Policy and Advocacy Leads, identifying and engaging on issues relevant across TA’s.

  • Represent US medical for US public affairs strategies and public policy imperatives and connect and align with other US and global policy-focused groups across Takeda including R&D, Regulatory, Oncology BU to ensure a one Takeda external voice

  • Identify opportunities and influences decisions to showcase Takeda medical collaborations. Partner with medical leadership, medical and corporate communications, legal and compliance for external communications

  • Direct consultants or vendors on project related work

Minimum Requirements/Qualifications:

Education

  • Bachelor's degree required

  • Pharm D, MD, PhD, M.P.H., M.S., or equivalent education or working experience preferred

  • Area of Specialization: Healthcare Innovation, Clinical Research, Heath Communications, Health Outcomes, Pharmacoeconomic, Health Policy, Health Services Research & Implementation Science, Public Health

Knowledge & Experience

  • 10 years experience in healthcare industry

  • 7 years experience in medical affairs, research and development, patient and stakeholder engagement, advocacy or related experience in the pharmaceutical industry or relevant experience at a non-profit, medical society, academic medical center etc.,

  • Strong communication, relationship building and strategic skills; demonstrated ability to identify opportunities for medical engagement and develop a set of strategic medical engagement goals.

  • Analytical skills, able to interpret and distill scientific, clinical and commercial information

  • Experience operating in a highly dynamic, changing environment.

  • Maintain a command of a large amount of scientific information across multiple therapeutic areas and show effective written/verbal communication skills.

Additional Information:

  • Willingness to travel to various meetings or partner sites, including overnight trips. Some international travel may be required.

  • Requires approximately 10-30%.
