MIT Lincoln Laboratory Group 47 - Summer Research Program Intern (Power Electronics) in Lexington, Massachusetts

The Energy Systems Group at MIT Lincoln Laboratory develops technology solutions that enhance the resilience and efficiency of both civilian and defense energy systems. This includes developing advanced architectures and system designs to improve the resilience of power grids, developing new control techniques for microgrids and distributed energy resources, developing hardware and real-time simulation testbeds, and power improvements to make warfighter hardware more capable.

We seek a summer intern to join a multi-disciplinary team that researches and develops power electronic circuitry, the controls that operate those devices, and the methods to increase performance. Experience in high frequency and RF design is desired. The candidate hired for this position will be tasked to understand existing power systems, their capabilities, drawbacks, risks, needs, and develop new power electronics designs. The outcome of this work will result in the rapid deployment of technology solutions to operators and will provide guidance to senior leaders in the U.S. government.

Candidates who are in the process of earning a B.S., M.S., or Ph.D. in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, phyics, or other engineering discipline will be considered.

Desired Skills:

  • Fluency with high-level programmming language (e.g., Python, Matlab)

  • Exposure to developing, implementing, testing, and evaluating new algorithms and concepts

  • Familiarity with power electronics simulation tools (e.g., Simulink, Ansys, spice, SABER)

  • Hands on skills in circuit design and testing in a lab environment

  • RF and high frequency hardware familiarity

  • Strong problem-solving skills

  • Detail oriented, able to multi-task, and have the ability to work autonomously for subsets of the summer

  • Effective written and oral communications skills in technical environments

    Selected candidate will be subject to a pre-employment background investigation and must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret level DoD security clearance.
